So just having installed an RGM Atlas belt drive, the question comes up as to how to apply 70 lbs of torque to this nut. I’m thinking that amount applied to a 20mm belt may not be good for it. Thoughts?

Gents, torque is measured in lbf-ft. A toothed belt transmits a static tensile force, not a torque. Using common belt parameters for a Norton, 70 lbf-ft equates to about 500 lbf of tensile pull at the belt.
Just finished putting mine back together after changing the main seal, I to kinda cringe thinking it going to slip a tooth. It's never had a problem doing it that way.
