G Day Onder,
I don't have an o/e tool kit but there's a piccie of it in the parts book- though it won't show you what's plated/painted, but it obviously will show what the contents are.
Someone is making new tool kits- I think in the US-I don't remember where I saw it but it was this year. I'm pretty sure I found it mentioned on a thread here- may be just try searching for tools, toolkit, etc? I reckon there was a link that took you to the site of whoever makes it and there were piccies. I was quite interested myself til I saw the price- once I converted it into £ I lost interest- that's what autojumbles are for!
Sorry I can't be more precise but it is out there! If you find a photo of the factory tool tray I'd be very interested. It's in the parts book (I have mk 3 850) but doesn't show how it's attached to frame. I have a Corbin seat and its mounting bracket sits right where I think the tool tray goes... I did post here about it, asking for photos but not nil response.

If you want a picture of the MkIII tool tray, I can photograph it for you. It's just a rather horrible (but handy) vacuum moulding that doesn't mount anywhere - it drops into the otherwise wasted space between the main spine gusset and the rear mudguard. It would actually fit to pretty well any Commando.

None of the tools were painted, unless the black colored open end wrenches are... I never tried to chip it off but I think it's plating of some sort.
The eBay kit is missing a couple of things -
Hex spanner for the rear axle (stamped steel). Rear shock spring adjuster (a hook spanner), the tapered tool used to protect the oil seal when installing the timing cover (yup, that came with the bike), and a very nifty screwdriver with interchangeable Philips and flat blades. The screwdriver handle fits inside the tubular spark plug socket to save space in the tool roll. My kit is complete except that I don't carry the tire irons. Of course I've added a few items to it.

And, in the ebay picture, that monkey wrench did not come with either one of the Commandos that I have owned.
I'll take some pictures of the MkIII tray tomorrow.
I'd always thought that the open-enders were black enamelled economy 'Superslims' but there was an unused MkIII on eBay a while back that appeared to have zinc plated tools in the kit. I can't read the markings on the spanners but the form is identical to the (metric) items which came with the Benelli that I bought new in 1977. Could it be that the tools were being sourced in Italy by then, as well as the frames ?
It is quite likely that the more generic tools were supplied as available. There is probably no one correct answer.
As the NOC service notes point out, the Phillips screwdriver is useless as all the crossheads on the bike are Pozidrive !

Thanks, those in the MKIII kit look exactly as those
in my R90 kit. They are not at hand, but they are good
believe it or not.
Mine are Spearpoint. One is cad silver the others are
black paint. I know Old Britts web page shows the
kit but it is a drawing not a photo.
Just trying to see what I actually need spanner wise
to have an original kit.

1. the original kit was useless? Why do I still use the combination spanners from my original Mk3 toolkit today in my workshop then, pray tell? Last used them yesterday on my latest private Commando project.
2. Abingdon King Dick- yes, a good name, and your guess is as good as my knowledge where Andover Norton get the spanners for the new toolkit from.......... Hence the price. The original spanners were German made Gedore.

I forgot about the .015" feeler gage for the contact breakers. That's probably languishing in the bottom of an old tool box somewhere in my shop. For my MKII the blinker lenses are held on with Philips screws, and I've had to replace one or two bulbs on the road over the years. The flat wrenches (mine are black) are also quite useful. The 9/16" is thin enough to fit the bolt that holds the chain guard and also the lock nut under the fork top nuts.
Funny that when I ride with friends it seems I'm the only one equipped with tools.

I fully understand that worrying about whether I should have black painted Spearpoints or cad plated ones
is hilarious and silly. But then the whole 'originality" thing is very much so. One of my Spearpoints is
cad the rest , or at least the four I have, are enameled or so they seem.
The best kit is the BMW ,or at least of the bikes Ive owned, the tools are amazingly serviceable.
The Spearpoints arent really too bad but as a former mechanic, Im pretty much spoiled by
Snap-on and Mac.
The set that just went off on ebay was at 75 dollars last I looked but several manuals were
included as well.
It is looks to be the same as my kit or at least matches the Old Britts illustration. All the ebay
spanners are cad plated.
Wonder when the change from enamel (is it indeed enamel?) to cad occurred. The tools
are otherwise identical.

This confirms what I suspected- that the tool tray is incompatible with a Corbin seat- becuase the very stout Corbin seat mounting bracket sits across the top of the frame tubes, and at either end is bolted to the back of the upper shock mounting bolts.
LAB, you have saved me the cost of buying the tray to work out I can't use it as long as I have the Corbin fitted to my MK3- thank you !
Do all Cdos use this tool tray or is there an earlier type, possibly with a different location? I have vague impressions some of the 750s had a metal strap inside the L/H sidepanel, but I don't know if this would fit a MK3? Oh and while we're taking sidepanels, mine is a Roadster 850.
