Tomorrow looks like fun

Impressive hunk a hunk a engine and mag drive centered mass look is sensational too. I predict it makes 127 shaft hp ~6900 rpm and 87 lb torque ~6200. Ain't much to see in a dyno test gone well but sure is something to hear so please pay some special attention for our audiophiles microphone fidelity. Will be instructive to hear initial run in throttling too. Head temps and EGT please. I hope its a one kick starter too.

I just got a message from Jim that he is going to Dyno the engine tomorrow. So I came to see if he was posting about it and found this thread. I wish I was there as well but even if I miss the startup I will be the lucky beggar throwing my leg over the bike this is going into.
Believe it or not this engine and a TT industries 6-speed trans is for a dirt bike. The plan was for a Cheney replica frame from Framecrafters but that will require more time and I got a message from flyingsquirrel29 with a METISSE FRAME KIT on ebay that is already made for this setup.
I currently have a 750 p-11 scrambler that runs pretty good but is only geared for about 65 mph and I don't want to gear it any higher or I will ruin the low speed running. If I could figure out pictures on this forum I'd post a picture of it. Of my 3 dirt bikes, the other 2 are 1981 Maico 490 and a 1981 KTM 495 the P-11 is the easiest to ride. It starts easy, sits lower and sounds way better. It is just about as fast as long as the ground is kind of smooth and I don't have to turn or jump too high.
My expectations are not quite up there with Hobot's 127 SHP at 6900 or maybe I am just conservative. No matter, it's a lot of cubic inches and it should have plenty of of torque for a good roost and an unreal top speed with the 6-speed.

Well blow me over with a feather Kent. Your revelation has flat floored me as thought this was Dances engine for mere pavement pounding not Pouncing OffRoading!!! Oh my my my a P11 only geared to 65 mph, OhFK YeaH! I don't have to preach to the likes of you that the Rear Thrust Rules The Roost! I predict you will have over 110 hp at the tire patch and more ft lb than can hook up if not taking care of throttle twitches. Leaves me quivering. Where is such a race event and conditions offered? I tell ya what I'm a lot more impressed by the isolastic triple links wonders with two links goushy complaint for off road handling than on pavement to point road racing is not really on my mind that much. I did lift both ends 2" for extra take up on the landing impacts. There is absolute magic lurking in the isolastic for insane power handling you just can't believe its like having 2 Two extra suspensions one to handle the tire confliction side loads and 2nd to handle the spikes of combustion to soften the hits to tire hooking up. ITT assured me their needle bearings will not starve for lube staying at hi load rpms in lower gears. Must see video of you tearing up the Earth.

My first gestimate was assuming it was Dances Magnar engine which is for a road racer and maxed out on every component for top end hi speed not grunting stump pulling below the ton. Maney 920 tested 104 hp @ 7200 so full race with 87 more cc might put down 115 at tire. Suppose it does put out 100 hp, 75 lb ft then what will ya do with it, detune or learn to take it? I see this nice stuff and just makes me want to see what it'll do to me. Engine details would be educational.

For Hobot, the commando isolastic arrangement is too heavy for me. My P-11 is right at 300 lbs and I hope to get about the same with the new bike. I would not think of de-tuning no matter how high the HP as I've always been of the belief that "too much" is "just right". Like my other bikes, the danger of indiscriminate throttle is welcome.

Sweet! Thanks for posting! Will have to watch again in full screen.

Just watched Oblivion, reminds me of the scene where the pact of earthlings are struggling to contain the captured DRONE after they fire it up and Morgan Freeman says -

"Man, that's one pissed off weapon"

Looks and sounds great. Your test stand / Dyno looks real nice too. Do you have a tach on it ? If so, how high were you revving it?

wow I just love that video, sounds absolutely barking! I'm going to taunt the Health and safety guys at work with it :)

Jim, Loved your videos. I can tell you were trained at NASA. You guys are absolute fanatics, however I still wonder why you are playing with commando engines, wouldn't a Weslake be a better starting point ? Or don't your race classers permit that ? I note your comment at tuning for more torque, I'm sure that is the best way forward. I think high revs will kill a commando engine very quickly. If you pay my expenses, I will come over and test ride the bike for you when it is finished.

Kent,
There are three video screens on the dyno that tell me just about anything you might want to know along with a 5 gas analyzer for tuning. In the video I wasn't reving it much beyond 4500 rpm.

I just finished another 20 minute session with it after dropping the needles 4 notches and leaning the idle screws. It is still too rich but it is closer. I have now taken it to 5000 rpm and seen 68 horse at 3/4 throttle. You are going to have your hands full....

If it's not a handful then it wouldn't be worth the trouble. About 35 years ago I put a Kawasaki H2 engine in a 72 Maico 400 frame. That was a handful ! When some teenage punk on a Honda is a couple feet ahead of me I don't want to already be at full throttle. If I have 1/4 throttle left then no problem, either I catch him or I wheelie out of control.

If you ride a 490 Maico you are already used to lots of Gs. I'm surprised you find the heavier P11 easier to ride tho.
I have an 82 490 with an Ohlins at back, it is just like riding a comfy old couch.... if a couch could accelerate really hard and wheelie a lot.... :D

What top speed will you gear this Norton 1007 for?
Will you put a lightweight set of lights and maybe a bicycle speedo on it? I'm thinking that it would be pretty hard to beat in a stoplight drag

What is that timing cover off ?

The timing cover is from an early twin but I cant say what model. It has the two tiny holes for the old brass badge. Jim

The brass badge and 2 tiny holes would make it an early 500 timing cover, for a Model 7 or Model 88 500cc, up to 1954.

I've never looked, but are the oil passages all big enough for 1007cc ?
