About the oil in spindles over heating, oil flows along them any way whether from each end to the middle or though them, likely same length and time exposure. This mod is decades old and also includes tapping into head oil via the head steady mount holes. Peel's spindled hollowed out a long time.

Hi fellas.
Back to the original posting.
Seems an over-engineering solution to fitting an oil gauge.
I am happy to improve actual flaws but 'cos we can', 'everyone is doing it' or 'I am sitting in my cold shed looking to do something' will not cause me to teardown a perfectly functional engine.
Over and out on this one.

OK, but pulling the spindle is two bolts on each side plus one valve cover nut to see that the valve is closed before pulling it out.
Then the new line is just two generic banjo ends and a piece of steel braid teflon hose. Plus a bolt to plug the extra hole if there is no gauge. Lot's cheaper than a SS overhead line kit. jim

Great idea.

Yes 'needing' understand your comments re extra fittings etc, although the guy was racing it and did notice a lot less tappet/valve clatter so figured he was getting a better flow/oil coverage where it was needed most

I am not sure if this is the case, I only had a look at the set up when the bike wasn't running, only going by the owner builders opinion, he was adamant it was quieter in the head when running.

I bother because it gives me a single banjo on each side of the head and an easy way to connect an oil pressure gauge.

Plus I would rather not have an oil line crossing over the top of the head which can be hard to route without touching things it shouldn't touch.

There is no other advantage or disadvantage that I know of.

I do feed the oil into the left hand side of the head as it is a known fact that the left cylinder tends to run slightly hotter than the right. Maybe because the crank is fed on the right side -I don't know.

I do know that the drilled spindle modification has been around for a long time -It's not my idea. But I have always done it both on my racebikes and my streetbikes and and a lot of other peoples bikes and never seen any bad consequences because of it. Jim
Not to step on your toes Jim, but Jimmy Schmidt has this video up about how to do this. It's at 8:13 into the video.
