That definitely was the problem. I had the bike out this morning and did a lot for WOT/coast down/WOT in various gears and not a trace of smoke.
Gotta wonder about the well-know seller of Brittbikes that guaranteed they had gone through it with a fine tooth comb and that it was totally "turn key." This issue is just one of quite a string of issues the bike had when and since delivered - some of them truly dangerous on the road (no oil in either of the front forks, one totally rusted; one rear shock with a broken damper rod so no damping on one side...oops, sorry, I could go on for paragraphs about this POS company and the absurd price I paid..)
I have come to the conclusion that if you want to buy a Norton, either buy a "barn bike" that you KNOW you will need to rebuild everything or at least assume that even if you buy it from a prominent dealer who tells you it's perfect, assume they are lying and treat it like you found it in a barn, REGARDLESS of how pretty the bike looks on the outside.
