Hi all - I seem to recall sometime back that some owners doubted the accuracy of the in-built timing scale fitted in the primary chaincase - I've always setup ignition timing using this but are there doubts ref the scale or markings on the alternator rotor ?

Cheers,

mwoo,

The timing scale is adjustable and due to the unknown, age and originality etc the accuracy cannot be guarranteed. It is worth checking the play in the rotor key while you're in there, you can then set the backlash the same way each time you have to remove and replace it.

Cheers,

I have just set up my timing marks on my A65 using a digital vernier gauge with the depth arm in the spark plug hole, found TDC, marked it and zeroed it, then moved the crank back to the depth required for fully adv. mark and marked it. I did this a few times in both directions, from fully adv. to TDC , and from TDC to fully adv. to make sure they were bang on. I then made a wee plate which attached to the studs holding the stator and marked the timing marks on that. I re checked it with a degree wheel and all seems to be in order. I'm going to do the same with the Commando, but will re mark the degree plate in the inspection window should there be any descrepency. Maybe not the most scientific method but it seemed to work, (hopefully!!!!!)
