Hey all, '74 850 commando...anyone know what I'm looking at here, there are no discernible timing marks at all on the rotor. Smooth metal not a mark anywhere. Do I wing it to time the bike or any other ideas much appreciated. I wanted to post picture of the flywheel but couldn't figure out how to upload a photo. Any help there also appreciated....Thx

Not sure what you mean by "flywheel". A timing mark is found on the "rotor" which is the moving part of the electrical generating alternator and is attached to the crankshaft.
This is inside the left hand side primary cover. There is a viewing hatch. If that is what you mean and there are no marks on it, someone might have installed it backwards so that the timing mark is facing inward. There are other ways to time an engine. Get a manual. Do a google search for "Access Norton engine timing".

was just going to make the correction...yes, Alternator Rotor. That was my plan for today to remove the rotor and see if it's backwards. Seems silly but you never know. Thanks for the feedback

It does sound as if the rotor is on backwards.

what about posting pictures to a post, any ideas there?

Only VIP members can directly upload here.

Non-VIPs need to use a photo hosting website such as: https://postimages.org/ (but not photobucket.com) and then copy and paste the appropriate image code ('Hotlink for forums' if using postimage) into their message.

Silly but true the rotor was installed backwards....onward...thx to all who replied....

Nice it was an easy fix!

But... If the bike is new to you, just beware, if a PO can screw that up, imagine what else may lie lurking waiting to be discovered....
