I try to stick with Wix on everything.
Amen, buddy! Also note that Wix is one of the few (if not only) manufacturers that hasn't switched over to cardboard endcaps inside on the filter element.

I know they say hand-tighten, but I'm paranoid about hand-tightening...
Same here, but don't rely on the vague torque setting offered by "hand-tight". Run it down until the gasket touches, then tighten by whatever means it takes to get to 1/2-3/4 turn past touchdown.

I believe most filters have a "this mark to this mark" on them. That's what I go by and as far as the Norton not needing the hose clamp the factory so thoughtfully provided; Yeh, I'm gonna try leaving it off just to see.

You wouldn't have to worry about the engine damage if it leaked because the oil on the back tyre would have given you ample warning :o
