There is I would say no right or wrong "Tickling" process...
Personally i press and hold down till it floods, but i see lots of vids where folk jiggle the tickler... repeatedly push them up and down till the bowl floods

Tickler....press or "jiggle"

The purpose of pushing down the plunger is to keep the float ‘down’ when it would normally be ‘up’ and therefore closing off the fuel supply, thus allowing in more fuel than the float would normally, and hence flooding the carb.

I can’t think of any functional reason for giggling. If anyone else can, please share…

Maybe pushing the float up and down rapidly in a chamber full of fuel acts like an accelerator pump and forces some fuel through the circuits ?

I know you just push the tickler button for a few seconds or until it floods depending on the bike characteristics
But I often jiggle the button to get the fuel moving
I've never damaged a float or the button

jiggy up and down with serious then pleased look on face at spurt seems sexier than just a simple push IMHO

I do both...... for my own pleasure I depress and hold, but when greenhorns are watching I then jiggle because they all believe magic is involved when starting an English bike and quickly inform me that I must jiggle the tickler to properly tickle..... especially when it fires off on 1st or 2nd kick. Who am I to fall short of their expectations when they stand there gaping and ever so full of crap? The thought of it makes me giggle whilst I jiggle.... Anyway in my experience the girls always prefer a jiggle and quickly lose interest when you only push on it.

If you've been letting the bike site with ethanol fuel, you sometimes MUST "jiggle" the tickler to free off the float needle that can stick in it's bore. Holding the tickler down for an hour won't get fuel to flow past a stuck float needle.

So, DON'T BE SO QUICK TO JUDGE.
