When a helicoil fails this is what’s next. I had to put a thread insert into the cylinder head on my ‘72 combat. I did it by hand very slowly and carefully to make sure it was in line with the other two studs. It fits onto the cylinders, so tomorrow I’ll assemble it.

You did all three, right? thats one job i passed of to the MAN... JComstock.
Just did one. The one on the other side in front was done by Phil Radford years ago. The one in the back is still original threads.

What is your opinion of the threaded insert? I’ve only ever done helicoil because they are readily available in my area but in my mind the threaded insert would be a better repair

if a helicoil fails you can put in a big sert . its the same thing as a time sert only
the outside diameter is bigger .

I've used those a good number of years ago, though not in this application, and if installed properly they are truly the squeezings & hold anything you'll ever dream of..... Never cared for helicoils though. First I was around these was late 70's-early 80's and believed they fell from Heaven.... Perhaps....
