G'day,

Norton died on me today! I had ignition (lights working) but no starting? Maybe have to check and clean switch gear etc, check boyer .......I'm only new to Norton so am learning from this site and google. I have put 2 new 6v trispark coils on, cleaned pilot jet, am waiting on carb kits so can disassemble Amal932's (why didn't Amal make the drain hole big enough to remove jet holder in one piece?)

Anyway, I broke down in front of a coffee club and a kids playground today. All I could think of if anyone hassled me was "at least I'm not in a plane!"

Cheers Cam (I have ignition and lights but no starting)

(and thanks to the 1972 Cb750 rider and his mate who tried to help me)

Did you check for spark?

When mine needed rebuild of engine (didn't die but was on its death bed) apart from that sinking feeling an many unrepeatable words the word overtime came up alot at work :D

Well I have been guilty of thinking and then muttering "YOU BTGIH " as perspirations build and emotions change. Tip - Did you know if you start and end a word with the original letters and jumble the middle ones that a word or sentence can be perfectly understood ?

G'day again,

I've been caught out concours, as my "just a lap around the block with no tools to check adjustments!"......turned into a couple of visits to different mates and further from home venture.

I haven't pulled the plugs yet (though they are brand new), after pushing her back to a mates house, I've left it there over night and consumed multiple Victoria Bitters to sooth my lack of preparation.

Will return this arvo for a looksie or more beer!

Even a bad ride on a Norton is good!.....I'm still smiling!

Cheers Cam

Mine quit in the left turn lane the other day. I said a couple of bad words as I pushed it to the corner gas station out of the way.
Then I reached down and turned on the fuel.
Stupid.

All goodly. Burned up all fuel on way to Hastings Ont. to pickerel fish recently and coasted into Esso station S. of town for a good 2 mins. Felt good to do so reaching down with left hand to shut off ign. Mind said YES all the way coasting for the 2. Got a sweet pic. under the bridge , wrapped in foil to eat, set up tent.

In my younger days when I smoked I would pull up on the side of the road for a puff, surprising how many bikes pull over to ask if I am right, I just tell them i'm waiting for the others to catch up to me  but its good to know poeple a willing to help when needed,
Another time I was riding along and seen a person I knew broken down on the side of the road on his old Shovel Head Harley, I pulled up and told him I go home and get my trailer, he didn't want my help as he use to put shit on my Norton and didn't want to except my help, that was 35 years ago and I ran into him a few months ago and we both had a good laught about that day, he still rides Harlies and he was surprised I still owned my Norton.
I am the same if I find someone broken down I will always stop the see if I can help, it don't matter what bike they ride we all got to help as one day it could be me that needs the help.

This season pulled over Ganaraska forest to trout-fish ,15 BMW's pulled over to see if I was alright, so said to myself Siht. Crawled out of bush to talk ,they $aid I was crazy to take that to a Norton Rally. $aid where ya all goin" ? Reply: Norton Rally Prince Edward County. No break downs other than several kickstarts due to overticklings after they left flawlessly. 1 Brown trout for campfire !

G'day Cam,
I take it you are in the Great Southern Land. Whereabouts? If near Melbourne, I'm happy to help out. Got all the tools and scars and a big box of hankies.
Cheers, Mick.

Close call road encounters bring up swear words but when my Combats die I get speachless for a time in what I call my 'Blank Staring British Iron state'...
then soft grunting/whimpering/sighing sounds, similar to money sucking out and blowing away again. A few times in middle of night sweating face bug covered running into impossible task, part breaks off, drops inside, missing etc, just a simple AWWAGGHHHH!!! as I run blindly out into darkness does it for me.

" I Should have rode the Honda"

but seriously...........
The only time my norton ever quit on me was when the old boyer box was dying.
I said something like " I think my ignition system is going bad, Give me another beer while I let it cool off"
Then I fired it up and rode it home.

Aslo depends if with company or not. Couple year ago Wes's '71 guit 160 mile aways but we only used mild dang its, crapola-shit with a few WTF's on not being able to find electrical faults - after finding fixing 3 that were show stoppers on their own.

G'day again,

I am a Ranger in far North Queensland ( thanks ML for the offer but 3000 odd k's between us), I finished work today after thinking all day what the problem could have been.....picked up the kids and waited for the misses to get home..( I start at 6:30am she starts at 9:00am) I was in the shed sans Norton( but looking at my other bikes thinking of Norton) consuming a VB which has lead to more....long story short " missus worked late!, Beers were cold, still no idea on Norton as no tinkering, but beers are cold!..........
The Nortons been around for 40 years!.....what's another day!

Cheers again

Cam

Ah VB....
Sorry got distracted by beer.

G'day again,

I went down to work on the Norton 3 days later, thought I would just try and start her first.....started on second kick!....quickly put helmet on and rode the couple of k's home. Pulled up in my driveway to open the gate and upon selecting neutral the bike stopped. I opened the gate came back to bike and started first kick, rode through gate found neutral again and bike stopped? Closed gate tried starting bike......nothing park light on with ignition 10 kicks....nothing....pushed to shed.

I inspected boyer stator plate and wiring to it, it's ohms were all in the range as per boyer trouble shooting
( one of the pick up coils has bait of rust so thought I'd found it!...but it all checked out with ohms)

I've been surfing the forum, so I'm going to run a fused wire to a toggle switch, then straight to boyer black box white wire and leave it setup for emergencys ....is it ok to do this?

I had a look at kill switch yesterday, but couldn't find power with test light......I think it's in the ignition switch...but will do hot wire to check.

Then onto headlight wiring and other handlebar switch block.

Thanks again

Cam

Check boyah trigger leads while flicking them. Other shorts and breaks distant to ignition can also do this too. Water in bowls is more consistent rough run or stalling. I'd say Crap not again...
