Thick pressure plate, way too thick! My confusion.

I received a 050014 aluminum hard anodized clutch pressure plate advertized as being .050" thicker than standard. I have measured my standard plate as .104 at the drive teeth and .225 over all. The one I got from RGM is .276 and .400 overall thickness. These measurement indicate .171 thicker than stock not .050. This is of course impossible to install.
Something seems amiss here. Has anyone else had this item?

Re: Thick pressure plate from RGM way too thick!

Boy, you may need to talk to them. I got a stainless magnetic gearbox drain screw that would not work from RGM. I had it modified locally for too much money. They should stand by what they sell. OB lists the standard 750 pressure plate at .225 and the 850 plate at .102 so you should have something to say.

Good luck.

The RGM item is listed correctly (OK 1 thou. out) as 50 over standard is .275".

Re: Thick pressure plate from RGM way too thick!

L.A.B.,
I think you are on to something there. I missed that one. Guess it comes with the age and not paying attention.

BTW, I still have the 4 plate clutch, maybe we could make a deal??

Re: Thick pressure plate from RGM way too thick!

roughly, thick plate .347 +.050= not far off .400
thin plate .227 +.050= not far off .276

The thickness of the teeth on one plate and the overall thickness on the other is nearly the same, order the right plate or convert to a 4 plate clutch.

I think perhaps your clutch has been converted to 5-plate spec . if it's got the "thin" pressure plate?

The standard .225" pressure plate is for the 4-friction plate 750 clutch.

I believe not, they are measuring the thickness of the teeth

Yes.....so the thick plate is .225" + .050" = .275" (.2760" as measured) at the teeth.

750cc:
Friction plate is: 0.145”
Plain plate is: approximately 0.080"
Pressure plate is: 0.225”
Total clutch plate thickness (4 friction, 3 plain and 1 pressure) is: 1.045”

850cc:
Friction plate is: 0.121”
Plain plate is: approximately 0.080"
Pressure plate is: 0.102”
Total clutch plate thicknesses (5 friction, 4 plain and 1 pressure) is: 1.027”

And you can't "order the right plate" as RGM don't sell a thin alloy pressure plate for obvious reasons.

OK LAB, I am going to give you a differant perspective.
Tell me what you see!

The upper photo appears to show a standard steel "thin" .227" overall (.102" at teeth .1045" your measurement) 5 bronze friction plate clutch pressure plate.

The second photo appears to show a .347" +.050" overall [.4005" your measurement] (.276" at teeth -your measurement) "thick" 4 fibre plate alloy pressure plate.

OK, I think I am beginning to understand. This item is for a 750 clutch pack, not the 850 clutch pack? It would be nice if RGM would have mentioned that in the description. And if I want to use this, I will have to cut .080 to .100 off the face and loose the anodization?
Thank you,
LAB

Correct! = it's meant to be used with the 4 fibre friction plate "750" clutch.

But it states quite clearly that it is : "DESIGNED TO WORK WITH FIBRE TYPE CLUTCH PLATES"

If you intend to thin it down in order to run it next to a bronze plate with the 5 plate setup then that will probably wreck it.

The alloy plate is only intended for use with fibre/fiber plates as the pressure plate is the last "plain" plate in the clutch plate stack.

Re: Thick pressure plate from RGM way too thick!

I never said I had a bronze setup.
I have five fiber plates(Barnet), .120, and four plain, .080. Hence the confusion.

Yes, it could have saved much confusion if you had mentioned that at the start, as a Barnett 5-plate fibre clutch is not a standard item, and you can hardly blame RGM for not knowing your clutch plates are a non-standard set.

Re: Thick pressure plate from RGM way too thick!

You could try removing a clutch plate?

It is hard to think that in this day that any clutch would be stiil be standard or that most all 850 are still with bronze plates.
Anyways, The last part was if the non anodized surface would be ok against fiber plate.

Re: Thick pressure plate from RGM way too thick!

I've got a 750 clutch pack set that should work with your "new" RGM plate. Perhaps your willing to trade all your other plates for mine ???

I think there are certainly many Commandos-especially 850s that still have a standard bronze 5 plate clutch (as mine has) as they never seem to wear out, but you miss my point that a 5-fibre plate clutch kit is not the usual replacement for either the original 4 plate clutch or 5 bronze plate clutch.

Anyone's guess, I think?

Re: Thick pressure plate from RGM way too thick!

If i have worked this out correct you should be able to run 4 fibre plates, and 4 steel plates, 2 together, and that should give you the correct stack height, if the barrnett plates are .125 thick

Re: Thick pressure plate from RGM way too thick!

I thin mine down a bit more and put a plain steel plate as the last plate so that there is no wear on the ally pressure plate. Prior to that the fibre plates did tear up the pressure plate

Re: Thick pressure plate from RGM way too thick!

This thread exemplifies why I do NOT like old brits clutch misinformation.
I have offered the correct information in my article. (Which pre dates the OB article by many years)

http://atlanticgreen.com/clutchpak.htm

simple
"thick" or "thin" clutch

early ...4 "thick" friction plates and "thick" pressure plate
late ....5 "thin" friction plates and "thin" pressure plate

especially noted is you must use the FULLthickness of the pressure plate
You can NOT intelligently discuss clutch stack height unless you do....why?

because the FULL stack height is what fills the space from the backing plate out to the diaphragm.
