What about a cartridge starter, same as our old 4000cc single Marshall tractors we have in Blighty :lol: Ease it over top dead centre and explode a 12 gauge into the cylinder!,It will amuse the kids,but the crank my protest!

Jim, Very intersting thread,i will enjoy all the progress. I think in a former life you built our "Roaring Meg" it was the biggest bore cannon used in the Cromwellian wars. I think it blew up after a few firings :roll:

Dang it quit distracting Jim, you're holding up Ms Peel's compression releases.
I am fully equipped to loft my full size anvil but lordy its pretty dangerous for such meager sonic thrill, not national emergency squadrons called out scale, not one call in they felt impact of an air craft carrier crashed in the field near by and so forth for county wide ripples. Its the type of power I could use to start Peel, but piston would have to be set just before TDC with valves close before ignition sucks it through TDC. Some day may entertain at a ralley, like LOP and feel it yourselves.
Without the major inert N2 gas we would not get very far on combustion products and heat alone.
Jim's piston radius is ~1.6", gives ~8 sq in per jug or !6 sq in total twingle.
Say 100 PSI cold compression gives almost 7 lb per sq in. Times 16 sq in
equals 112 lb TDC force to over come by poor kicker leverage or strained starter.
If 120 static PSI then 1/5th more to kick over but these examples are for clapped out 8 CR engine.

I think the single 500 BSA B33 I had in the 60's had a sort of mechanical cush drive in the primary. It had some sort of spring arrangement as I remember. Gave me trouble one time but can't remember how I sorted it. The do sound nice and have a distinctive feel in the pants as I remember. Like hobot says, power surges as you pick up speed, you can feel the pulses.

Had an old geezer at the bar telling me about his flat track days way back when. His beezer was fast, but the harleys would kill him out of the corners. Him and a buddy got a little drunk one night and cut a cam in half and welded it back together so that both cylinders would fire at the same time.
When he fired it up in the pits everyone was telling him he needed to check his motor cause it sounded like it was only firing on one. He just smiled. Said it would pull like a beast, but power faded at high rpm, and it would rattle his teeth something fierce. Ended up getting DQ'd for illegal mods. I thought he was pulling my leg....
Curious how she'll turn out. Oughta be a beast.

Yes the old singles had a cush drive in the clutch center. Wasn't to sturdy if I remember right. I was thinking about the cush drive from the end of an old GMC blower with the flat leaf springs might work pretty good. I think I might even have one of those stashed away somewhere.
I rode a buddies SR500 that had been bored and stroked to a 760 something. I loved the power and sound of that motor. I always though that if that motor was in a Norton chassis it would be sweet. That idea has stuck in my head every since. Jim
