The real cost of lockdowns….

The company I was with, at the time, was really wrestling with themselves over mandating COVID shots. They had a very progressive management staff that was desperate to do everything the government even hinted at demanding. This was coupled with a very conservative rank and file in a very conservative industry. Management knew that any such mandate would result in the collapse of their company. Techs and trades people didn't take kindly to top down authority especially when they knew that it was their skill and labor on which the company depended. In the grand scheme of things who is more valuable, a CEO or the guy that can fix your busted skid-steer?

With all that has happened/changed in last 15-20 yrs …. I find myself thinking , “damn man you a dinosaur” …. While I can use a c-phone and get around a ‘puter , I just don’t believe the new tech has made it a better world , afraid things have gone in exact other direction , at least in my eyes ….

Yup. True story.

As a 50s born 'boomer', I retired in Jun 2022 @ 65and a bit. Not so many years ago (in the UK) retirement at 65 was pretty much compulsory.

The whole covid palaver did make me think about things in a different way, and made me think it was time to go. And after 38 years at the place, I am sure I had become a dinosaur.

The way I see it, my retirement opened the door for a 'youngster' to step in. And having met the new guy, he will do well there.

Norton relevance; my Commando had been buried in the garage and not used for some years. The 2020 lockdown time away from work was spent getting the Commando up & running.

<Maybe the lockdown just sped things up a bit>

That is the core of the situation. Things had changed already and the so called pandemic just moved it along a bit faster.
The sharks always take advantage of any situation and no different this time. Tell me one 'leader' who has apologized for the widespread overreaction? How many have been nailed for pocketing vast sums or even
lesser ones? Few at best. The mess continues today. One only has to look at the debt load of the American government which is now completely unsustainable. Inflation has destroyed savings which took a lifetime to accumulate.
Kids will always get slagged for being less able than their elders. But this time it is for real. Schools are a
hollow joke. Adults are no longer willing to be adults. Kids suffer.
The Woke idiocy is just another in a long line of religious frenzies stretching back to the pyramids. But
the sh_t has hit the fan and now the lucky ones will pass soon and those behind left to live in the ruins.
...and on that note, Happy Christmas.

Well articulated. So spot on.

...and Merry Christmas to you as well.

I agree that lockdowns were a response to a problem that existed but was not really fixed by the solution. And some companies and employees like manufacturing and construction were really hurt, especially by the governments that went way overboard.

However, there has been some unmentioned good from them. Many now work at least part time remotely and the technology to enabled that to be efficient grew very quickly during the lockdowns. There was no great push to provide for efficient remote work since there was no real demand. The lockdowns radically changed that. It also changed the thinking of upper management in many "white collar" corporations from thinking everyone must be in their cubical to be efficient.

I still have an office for my IT business, but I haven't been in it for a very long time - yet I have more "face-to-face" meetings with customers today than I did when I was there every day - we'll be on a Zoom call faster than someone can walk to my office and we're able to share screens and info from all parties from their own computers.

Of course, there are slackers who use it as an opportunity to not work - that's why I have logs!

Also, my favorite restaurant had absolutely no capability for carry out. They were essentially closed by scared customers and the lockdowns (Virginia was not as tight on lockdowns as some). The owner didn't want his workers destroyed so as many a possible were kept on the job by having delivery and curbside pickup. He now still has a line to get in, but he also kept delivery and curbside pickup. So, he now employes more than he did pre-pandemic. He thought delivery and curbside pickup were silly for his sit-down restaurant before the pandemic.

Yep Happy Christmas!

You are correct. The COVID thing just forced a number of issues, already waiting to happen, to burst forth all at the same time. We live in a time when the word "adulting" represents something a person has to grudgingly do every now and then. The WOKE ideology reminds me of Medieval Scholarly texts that, for example, used to identify wild animals by their "personality traits." things that were taken very seriously at the time and amount to total hogwash today. We are entering a realm of make believe and cos-play that is passing for truth and knowledge.

Yes, the USA has run up unbelievable debt but what people do not realize is Inflation is the way they balance that debt by devaluing the dollar. It is a subversive tax on everyone with savings.

Inflation: "No taxation with out representation!" So much for that Founding Fathers stuff....

Many years ago, I was involved in an industrial incident which resulted in a man losing his eyesight, then hanging himself as a result. I was called into court as a witness and was on the stand for about 2 hours. I became very disenchanted with health and safety 'experts'. So I went back to part-time study and achieved a post-grad diploma in occupational hygiene. Part of the course is a section on radiation. If you think Covid was bad, at least it was not radioactive. These days people bullshit on about Australia getting into nuclear power generation. We cannot even store petrol safely.
The Americans tested bombs in the Marshall Islands, then moved the population back in. Apparently the life expectancy there, is now 40 years.

Diner seats 150 people. Used to open at 6:00AM, for WORKING people.
Now, published hours are 7:00AM.

But, still locked up, because the candyass cook isn't here yet. Because of wind & rain. You know, why would you get up a few minutes early. 🤡

I'm here because my customer texted, said they won't open until 9:30 today, because their little snowflakes can't/won't get going either.
I was an hour into a 1-1/2 hour drive already.
They're all hiding in the basement.

Because, remember, they WERE NEVER MADE TO DO ANYTHING THEY DIDN'T WANT TO.

Work ethic has vanished with all the handouts

Again, something that was predicted by some at the time. IMO it’s an obvious consequence.
With me, work ethic was never a consideration, because I only ever did things in which I had a genuine interest. Every day of my working life, I was excited to get there and start work. Life is about having fun -if you do not love what you do, you are an idiot because you will be a long time dead. The best job I ever had was the most stressful. When you line all the parts of a puzzle up, push a button and get an excellent result - that is fun.
It was a direct reading emission spectrometer with a computer which self-calibrated. I could do a full analysis of 13 elements in a piece of steel in 13 seconds, regardless of the type of steel. It took 15 minutes for the system to self-calibrate.
I am probably a strange person. But I have loved every job I ever had.

if you watch this video, you will see kids being interviewed about what they want. Mostly, they all want to be wealthy because they believe that would make them happy. I suggest they have got their priorities wrong. If you do things which make you happy, other people will pay you to do them, because you will always be very good at doing them.
I am an industrial chemist, but I am also very good at managing, computer programming and engineering. All of my tertiary qualifications were achieved through part-time study while working. During my working life, I have had about 10 career changes, The most staff I have had was 32 in 5 laboratories.

What have your qualifications and career got to do with the real cost of lockdowns ? Serious question

Found out this morning that a workmate had committed suicide on Friday
Whilst I can't say the lockdown is too blame or not i really don't know, but in my opinion it hasn't helped !
I know the 3 years have not been good for him
His missus threw him out he was living in a bedsit struggling to pay his rent and using a food bank
On all sorts of anti depressants etc
A lot of people are in a similar position
I guess it's just the way you handle it!!!
