hi all.. is the fenders on my 73 850 stainless or chrome?? and can they be buffed or should I get them chromed

should be stainless and you could have them polished or just clean them up with never dull or flitz or something similar.

They are stainless and can be polished. But they scratch easily. I had mine chromed long ago.

how much did you pay or should i expect to pay to have them chromed

Stainless Steel, the type used for fenders, is non magnetic. (some types of stainless, the martensitic types, for knife blades etc are magnetic) You can test to see if your fenders are stainless with a magnet.

Both my fenders were chromed in the late 70's, I forget the cost. I had the front fender rechromed last year and it was about $250 including fixing a small dent. It'll have to be done again this winter, as the front edge took a scuffing in my recent fall. Some chromers won't do stainless, as it's difficult to get adhesion. You have to be careful when mounting, if you chip the chrome at a mounting hole it'll start peeling off. IMO the difference in looks is worth the hassle and expense.

Your 73 probably has the same front fender as my 74 - they have a raised lip at the front and rear edges. Replacement stainless front fenders available today are later MKIII style and don't have the raised lip in the back.

There was someone on here that has/had a set of chrome fenders front and back for sale cheaper than 250.00. I think I saw them on ebay for 200.00 for the pair. I can't see ruining a nice pair of stainless fenders to chrome them, but to each his own.

I had both of my fenders polished by a shop in Santa Ana, CA. They also welded up two extra holes in the front fender. One can hardly find where the holes were, and they both look great. Cost was $120.00.
