How fast can your bike REALLY go? Here's an easy and LEGAL way to find out.

www.texasmile.net

No racing license needed, just nominal bike prep (tape up lights), full leathers & good helmet.

I'll be there Thursday afternoon to help setup the entry tent, working at various points around the track all weekend, and conducting a short Sunday morning Christian service before the racing starts.

The place is the Goliad Industrial Air Park north of Beeville (see the txmile site), which is shut down twice a year for this event (April & October).

April's top speeds included a 260+ turbo Hyabusa (a new record for the standing start mile), and 250+ Lamborghini.

I would have topped both of those, but I was busy working the event.

I am also tasked with staffing the various stations, and would GREATLY appreciate volunteers with confirmation as soon as you are sure you can make the event. THANX A TON!

Forgot to mention: No entry fee for volunteers.

Volunteer staff all get fed lunch & dinner on Sat & Sun, very tasty BBQ sandwiches with chips & drinks.

Oh, yeah, volunteers can run thier car, bike, truck, hotrod, whatever, but you have to pay to run (see the website for details).

For a few years I have wanted to build some vehicle for this. I know supras dominate alot of the competition. Is there a vintage class?

No vintage bike class as of yet, they break it down by induction/fuel and ccs.

Paul wonderful to hear your connection to this. Its on my list to do and one of the few places for Ms Peel to really leave her Norton-ish impression. The lack of needing a State Driver License is a huge big plus for me.
Hope to be able to pair us down for special events to 1 lb-ft torque per 4 lb total mass. Similar hp/mass too. One of the few situations a steering damper might be nice or required by rules so making provision for a Scott's damper I have on hand.

Steering damper is required, can be friction or hydraulic.

You coming out in October this year, or next year's spring meet, or...?

Thanks for alerting-inviting me to these events Paul. I sure would like to see what Peels pecking order is someday. Even if blows up or get blown away, what a way to go eh.

In Peel's case the OIF fill cap is right where the post for a Scott damper goes. I've eye balled half ass mocked up to see maybe cap and itd one way vent stalk is low enough to put post above it. Some bikes install a Scott with the post in front of the stem instead of behind. Of course could alway slap on a rod type damper but they don't off the limited radius dampening the Scott's does. It releases its dampening when taken beyond its set angle. It never completely goes away though so I don't like em for just riding or racing around. I'll just have to go to a Texas Mile and see how it motivates me or not. I also want to attend if not run a salt lake event before I die too. I'm kind a scared of drag race wheelies been injured bad twice by that unintended dumping. Maybe need a wheelie bar if front fork tuck down ain't enough.

Hey, you have a full mile to get your terminal speed up; no need to smoke the tire or wheelie, just give it some proper wellie and keep it pinned.

Ohhh my a flat out mile is something to tempt most everyone and their dog and pony. In Peel's prime she'd top out indicating 135 pretty quick but last few mph's took 1/4+ to creep up on. New Peel's drive train can't take hi dump loads of new engine in the works. I've snagged a big ole sleek fairing so who knows how fast she or I can dare push our luck. But most seem to get away with it so why can't I or die trying eh. Peel has replaceable rear sprocket so can gear up to impressive top end. Only know that engine calculators and feed back from race builders imply Peel could hit 150 in 3rd then snick top with over 1000 rpm to spare. Power to wt implies under 10 sec 1/4 ET if there is traction enough on skinny tire. 130 may fit.

Checked map to see Goliad is below San Antonio, so about 13-15 hr drive-1100 miles.
I only got so many weekends left, WTF should I do with em but follow the likes of you and other gearheads joy rides.

You should have gone to Bonneville and broken that puny 129 MPH record for pushrod 1000s. Piece of cake with leftover icing.

That fairing appears to be a Don Vesco "Rabid Transit", no?

Yes Don Vesco "Rabid Transit, good call old eagle eye. Its got lowers as seen.
Also have Vetter Windjammer with lowers and luggage boxes but don't like it as much. Neither ever mounted by me so far. I'm very pensive to risk fairing and blower. REALLY need crash bar armor some how.
Peels got basis of maxed out engine but I've on purpose and by cost stayed with small ports so top end power will be restricted.
Would be cool to try a short stroke version with big passages with boost.
Alas the Drouin I've got is not that strong compared to what a big turbo could flow.
Alas I'm mostly stuck on the farms so what good would it do me.

Now if they added a skid pad side G's event or slalom then maybe Peel could shine.

BUMPITY-BUMP!

I'm taking off Thursday morning, hope to see some of y'all there!

Quick report-

Top bike speed was a turbo Hyabusa at 278.6 NOT A STREAMLINER!!!! A standard-bodied 'Busa with the front forks cinched down. That's a new Standing Start Mile record.

My speed was "somewhat" less...

My buddy Charlie ran 170+ on his FIRST RUN EVER with his new BMW RR1000, finished the weekend over 180.

'69 Triumph Bonneville 650, box stock except .020 over & electronic ignition.

Winds topped 30MPH, it was just a "fun run"

A tad over 86. (It ran 97+ last year, which is why I was so disappointed)

The bike did Track school at Texas World Speedway, 4 races in '07, 13 races (including the high banks at Daytona and 4.1 miles per lap at Road America), and a run on the salt at Bonneville in '08, a run at the Texas mile in '09, and 4 races this year before doing the 'Mile; all this with no more than oil & spark plug change once a year, and this year I cleaned out the carbs. It's been thrashed mercilessly and it really needs a top end job to tighten it back up.

A testament of how durable these motor can be no doubt. Heck with the wind and all a respectable run.
