Testing a headlight switch 57SA

Well that was easy enough! (post no. 1393) Seeing as it seems I'd totally forgotten about using postimages.org, I think I must've become very confused about what was going on with images. Thanks again L.A.B.!

I just tried uploading photos to a couple of hosting sites and then inserting them here, but it didn't seem to work. Possibly because I was using those sites as a guest, rather than signing up for an account.

Signing up for postimages.org is easy and free, drag and drop your image where it says (you might have to navigate there via the 'Upload' link near top-left), click on 'Share', then copy the link that's offered for use on forums and then paste in your comment. Worked for me just now anyway, HTH!

Looks like it might be working, though they're coming out rotated. Anyway, here's another couple with the rotation hopefully corrected:

And in case the other before pic disappeared, here one of them following what I think is the proper photo uploading procedure:

That's better! :)

Tach. and speedo lights not working or just not very bright?

No bulbs in them yet, but I'm getting power on the wires for those. I also found one bulb in the PO's aftermarket speedo which he must have taken from the Commando. I just tested it also and it works, so I have one :).

I've got the bulb working in the speedo now also. It's a fairly crude setup at the moment though because the soft bit that you are meant to push up into the back of the clock is too small. It must have been for the PO's aftermarket speedo, so it's just kind of laid in there temporarily. I'll need to get the soft inserts for both instruments.

I think I know the answer to this question, but I'll ask it anyway. Does the engine need to be running for the accessory plug to work? I'm guessing not. I'm getting power on the negative side, but there is no continuity between the ground on the plug and the positive battery terminal. I can read the well over 12 volts of power from the battery with one multimeter pin in the negative plug and the other pin on a ground wire elsewhere on the bike.

Correct, it does not.

The plug should have a red ground wire connected as well as the negative (brown/blue).

Thanks LAB. Yeah, it's got a positive wire going to it, but there is no continuity between that and the positive battery terminal. Should be relatively easy to sort out now I'd say. In the meantime, would there be any risk associated with running the bike without the ground working on this? I do plan to sort it out long before I get her running (I'm waiting on a few exhaust parts), just curious.

There's no risk, as it's just a simple accessory/battery charging socket.

Unless you actually have the plug then there's not much point in connecting it at all.

Cool, that's good. What does the plug look like? I have the bit that you plug into.

I now have a functioning accessory socket and I made an interesting discovery while sorting that out. I was surprised about the lack of continuity between the positive side of the socket and the positive battery terminal because I had been very careful when I hooked up that wiring originally. I used that special electrical connections grease and heat-shrink there (and everywhere else where it was applicable). But there was no continuity at all between that wire end and the positive battery terminal so I was a bit concerned that maybe it was an issue within the new harness. Anyway, I went around the bike looking for another ground wire that I could possible connect to the socket and I found another red wire with no continuity to the positive battery terminal! For a second I was really concerned, and then it clicked. Remember that mystery extra ground wire that was part of the horn wire cluster? Well, it turns out that that wire is the other end of the ground wire for the accessory socket! This end was in the battery box anyway, so I've got it setup so that I can hook this up directly to the battery positive, or not, whenever I like. And it works perfectly now.

Anyway, I'll put a quick note on this up on the thread that I had specifically on that extra ground wire, just in case anyone else runs into this.

Thanks again!!

J
