74 850 commando, steel roadster tank. I've used the rubber centered muffler mounts on the rear of a tank before. Can they also be used on the front?

Yes, same thread. A problem I see is what you want to use can break then the tank is loose. Rubber washers stacked on a stud per stock don't have this issue and you can adjust the height if needed.

Exactly what I've just done on my 850, same tank.
My Ducatis left the factory with similar rubber mounts on the front and a rubber strap stretched between bobbins at the back of the tank like early 750 Commandos

Yes, and the rubber mounts can be had in different heights.
