Will the rubber doughnuts used for the muffler mounts and head steady work as front tank mounts?

The exhaust mounts will work as tank mounts but are not really suitable. The problem being, in the unlikely event of the rubber detatching from the steel section your fuel tank would only be held on by the rear strap. The correct type of bobbin for this purpose would have a flexible steel braid joining the steel halves together(moulded inside the rubber)

Good point Matchless, I hadn't thought of that. I will just order the studs and discs shown in the parts manual.

Zorries work good for those grommets. You can pick up 2 pair at the dollar store for $3. They make good tank rubbers for the main tube too. Prolly find a set to match your color too.

I got rid of those hateful nylocks too and just use 2 nuts, one as a lock nut. I had the tank off today and it didn't take me 15 minutes to run off those nylocks.

I think it was L.A.B. that posted a while ago about using wing nuts, Drill a hole in the lower part of the tank stud, and use one of those spring clips for a safety.

But, I'm probably wrong, and now L.A.B. will post some one line reply and make me look like a fool, ok, more of a fool.

No, I don't think it was me. :?

I use wing nuts on the front tank mounts. They are nyloc wingnut, no holes drilled in the studs. This area does not require tons of torque and I have never had one loosen. I regular wing nut might be just fine. They are quite wide offering enough leverage to tighten adequately by hand.

If you fiddle fart as much as I do, they are quite handy.

All the rubber mounts are the same whether exhaust, headsteady or tank.

That's a great idea... I wish I had thought of it years ago!

One of us is getting senile. I fear it is eye.

I took the tank off today to do some inspection on the wiring and it took me all of 5 minutes, and that included going downstairs to find the large crescent wrench to hold the fuel tap that wasn't cooperating. I put a standard nut on the bottom of the wing with a fender washer under it, then the L bracket for the reflector, and then another nut, which is actually a lock nut. Once you loosen the lock nut, everything else comes off with the fingers. I've never been so pleased with some mod I've made, but that's just me.
