Tail light change

I had a 73 with the small light and a 74 with the big light. Although I always thought the year on the title and the year they were made was a little sketchy. Got them both from the original owners though.

What year did the switch to the larger tail light occur?

This change supposedly occurred at serial 212278, so, around late (Oct./Nov.?) '72.

Yeah, I'm in the process of switching over. I had the earlier style on and accidently bent the turn signal out taking a cover off the bike. When I straighten the turn signal out, the ear that the stalk goes into snapped off. This is an aftermarket piece and the ear is attached differently than the factory part. I happened to have a complete unit off the 74 parts bike I have along with a new lense that I had bought for my Bonneville. So for the time being that is going on. Since my bike is a very late 72 titled as a 73 I'm just going to have to pretend it is correct. This will also allow me to use the small light on my 71 when I get around to doing it, as it doesn't have any tail light now. Ah, the joys of a parts stash.

I thought the bolt holes are different on the old vs new tail lights. As in not interchangeable, without punching new holes in the fender.

Going to the later style leaves two holes that I will have to fit plugs in.
