Hi I have an Australian imported 1972 roadster combat 206xxx that is fitted with the 850 square tail light. I assumed it was fitted by a previous owner but have been told there was a change over to this tail light around mid 1972. Would anyone know if this is correct. I have brought the beehive style tail light to refit.

That taillight is basically for 73 and later but that would mean that is started in 72. However, 206xxx seems too early to me. Are there extra holes in the fender? The mounting hole pattern is different between the 679 (earlier) and 917 (rectangular) taillights.

I will need to double check but from memory there are extra holes in the guard. The bike is in shop after getting stripped for new rods. The last builder fitted a brass bush in one of the con rods.

I have two MkV 750 Commandos, sold in 1973 but build dates in October and November 1972. Both have the big square rear light. As far as I know MkV's serial numbers began with 22XXXX or 23XXXX.

This is the top secret one . Used only by those in the know , in His Majesty's Service . So if you see one , now you know . Well , Er . LUCAS actually . Same fit .

220 0000 and MY 1973 according to Norvil M/C, which means the first samples were built in September 1972.
I have 2203xx which must have been assembled in the second week of that month, assuming an output of about 220 bikes/week.

I agree the earlier is much nicer looking. I am sure the red box they put on the later bikes satisfied a U.S. requirement - count our blessings they didn't wrap us in rubber like they did the later MGBs.

For the existing drilling, on the later bikes, is there a promising alternative out there I have not seen?

My '72 2095xx had the earlier style. Would the switchover have also included the deeper instrument cups?

There are extra holes in the mud guard. The brick type bolts either side of the frame loop and has two more mounts holding the lower bracket near the mud guard tip. The beehive has two mid way down from the frame loop. Someone has fitted the brick type tail light to my 72 bike Cheers
