Tach cable guard

My bike came with a bunch of spare parts. Two of which were a Tach cable and Tach drive housing. I replaced them both. I did not notice that the original cable had a sheath on it that is apparently heat protection. The new one got melted a bit where it sits between the fins and the exhaust crossover. I noticed on a friend's bike he has a metal spring like protector. Is there anything that I can get to put on the new cable to give it protection from heat? I would like to do this without disassembling either end of the cable.

I "think" the spiral metal guard is back on the Venhill tach cables I've seen. There was one on eBay from US Venhill and I emailed the guy and he said it was a stock picture and he would "get back to me" on whether they really were that way. Never did. There was a long time when you couldn't get the metal sheathed stock cable.

It (metal spiral) was on the one I picked up from Venhill Direct through EBay (Feb 2012).

You might be able to find a cadmium or zinc plated spring, similar to the type used for screen doors, cut it to length, and then wind it onto your cable.

Great idea. Lowe's has zinc plated springs. One is .44" diameter. $5. That may be a good size and the price is right.
