Tac looks great but doesn’t seem to work

Getting down to the last of my motorcycle money. I have the 1970 Norton Roadster. Before I spend more cash I’d like to know if there is a way to test the tac. It’s set up on the bike, have driven but nothing from the tac. Also where can I buy a tac with limited funds.

I used a 'easy out' to chuck in a hand drill on reverse. It won't make it top out, but it should make the needle move up a ways. Make sure your cable is not going into the tach more than about a half inch. If it goes too far, it will damage the tach.
 
Source a new tachometer cable for the 70 first. It's usually the cable. As Dog says don't feed it deep into the instrument. The end of the cable at instrument should be square. It wears there , but the danger is grease travelling up and into the instrument.
 
It can also be the spade connector between the cable and the drive gear, which I have had shear. Disconnect cable from tach, hold the end in between your fingers and kick the bike. You should feel it spin.

Take a 3 inch common nail and cut off the head. Chuck the nail in an electric drill, put the square tapered end in the back of the tach, and turn on the drill. Make sure you have the direction of rotation correct. You'll soon find out if the tach is any good.
 
Yes test the spade connector and cable first before giving up on the clock. Note there are repair/rebuild services available to renew a damaged clock. Usually run less than half cost of a new clock.
 
You could try the rear speedo cable disconnected from the speedo, just spin the back wheel. . . . .
