What is the proper fix for this?

Copper?

Cov-Seal?

When I build a triple or a for that matter a Triumph twin, I tend to use copper with a smear of Wellseal. The problem with these engines is the head bolts go through the rocker box, which to me seems like a poor idea.. Also, the rocker box is best doweled to the head to stop it moving about.

They are not doweled from the factory?!?!
Sorry, I'm new to the Tridents.
 
Are there any pitfalls to watch out for when doing this job?


Just R&R and set valve clearances?

For this job, just need to order two rocker box gaskets & two cover gaskets, correct?

Double and triple check that the pushrods fully clear the holes in the copper rocker box gaskets during their operating cycle.

There's a few
Mainly concerning oil leaks from pushrod tubes etc
You need the right amount of crush on the seals
The quad type seals will help here
Make sure you replace the 1/4" aluminium washers in the base of the rocker box
Don't overtighten the bolts on the rocker box inspection caps
There's probably other things to look out for that I can't think of right now

I've never been able to source them. When I order from a vendor who lists, they never fit.
Go down in there with a end mill as most are either long gone or smashed to death.
I like the Trident but so much of it was an off the shelf bodge and this is well known by now.
Why I continue with it is beyond logic.
Edit: Yes on the copper gaskets with some sealer. Fly cut the box and the mating surface on
the head too.

Have you tried TMS in Nottingham ? dealers since Roman times.

Well, he lists but doesn't sound like the one. I shall have to ring in morn.
Were the original ones alloy or steel?
 
Some of the problems are caused by the poor quality parts that are supplied. I found several times that on the copper rocker box gaskets sourced from a popular supplier in the UK, that the holes don't all line up, which is a real pisser when you have just put your smear of silicone on the gasket and everything has to stop whilst you find your small round file to elongate some holes. Also as Fast Eddie said, the copper gaskets can foul the push rod tubes, so a bit more filing with the electric sander on the gasket. So what I do now is buy these from P&M who always remind me that they are not mainstream parts suppliers when I ring them, and up to now their gaskets have always fitted without remedial action. For what it's worth, P&M also said to me not to bother with the aluminium washers.
 
Which is why they get pulverized....
These bolts are IIRC only supposed to be torqued to 6 ft/lb. I treat myself to a 4-20 ft/lb 3/8" torque wrench last year for better acuracy of small value bolts.

One of the other issues with these washers is that when they are "used," they are hard to see as its alloy washer in alloy hole, and sometimes get left in the hole with another washer added on top by unsuspecting owners who are new to these engines.
