hi
is it possible to bring a good used madigan starter( T150) from usa to uk as hand luggage without commiting a sin ?

Technically, no, you should pay duty.

Practically, even if you're stopped (which is highly unlikely) when you explain that you bought some old vintage motorbike parts at a car boot sale for a few bucks, I doubt anything would be said.

But also on the practical side, you may be prevented from taking anything on as hand luggage if the security officer thinks it could be used as a weapon.

Personally, I'd put it in my checked luggage.

I know of somebody who brought either 2 or 3 (can't remember as it was a few years ago) Madigan starters back with them from the USA, without any problems apparently. I don't know if they were in the hand or hold luggage.

Worst case scenario (I think) would be that you'd be charged duties on it (them).

yes its a 160 starter to fit to a 150
Wow. So you did a conversion? I'd love to see photos! Also love to know how much work and expense was involved. Not a minor project, to be sure.

hi
not done it yat but is a known conversion using t160 parts ,clutch housing clutch with ring gear and starter of course

A friend of mine brought a new one back for me from the US. Dave Madigan sent it to him while he was over there on holiday.
Took it through US Customs in his hand luggage which was checked. He didn't have to pay any duty at all.
PS you will also need float bowls without drain plugs if you are using Amals, and there is also some minor filing to do on the case for it all to fit up properly.
If you can't get hold of a T160 clutch cover, Les Whiston at Rob North triples has them made, aswell as his own starter conversion .
