synthetic gearbox oils

Just a reference point regarding the level of robustness of the commando gearboxes.
From all I gather from very reliable sources, the Cdo had a well known pattern failure of exploding second gear.
The operators were standard issue madmen immitating bank robbers in the hayday, like most young broncos were.

Now that those operators have morphed into fine, cultured gentlemen, and riding to meet other old duffers for lunch at a leisurely pace, the failure rate is much lower.

Ergo, the evolved perception the box is robust now.

Subjective as hell.

My '97 Moto Guzzi 1100 Sport has an unusual (for Guzzi) straight-cut gearbox, famous for inadequate material and quality control. Noisy as heck, too. I tried half a dozen different lubes, Redline Shockproof heavy worked and seemed best. After way too much research, I switched to Chevron Delo ESI 85w140. The transmission was immediately quieter, and over the next 100 miles softened noticeably even more. Something Boron blah science.

The truth is we really don't know which gear oil is best, but everyone has their favourite.
It was the same with the engine oils prior to Comnoz testing.
Some of the favorites didn't fare well in the testing.

Looked like you were carrying the front wheel off the ground about 3 inches through 3rd gear. I'm thinking that was a hallucination though. šŸ¤£

Yes, it was just yanked back to top on the front suspension. Sadly, no third gear wheelies with this one. She goes good for a stocker though.
270 cranks are OK but you can't beat the sound of a couple of angry 360 degree twins!
Regular old 80/90 gear oil in mine, just to stay partly on topic.

I meant 1st gear through 3rd gear with the light front end off the ground, like at the circus or some such. :) Sounded good for sure.

On topic is way over rated?

I really noticed a difference with Motul GearBox, the box was slicker.
The difference was more apparent when I took it out after a few years of running it, and the good attributes went away.
Definately more notchy without it in there. Haven't tried Redline or Royal Purple yet.

How about AG90 Classic vehicle gear oil.
What do the oil experts think of it. I'm no expert, I just read it on the label.

Any issues with the 'Yellow' metals with this?

I've started using AG90 gear oil. It says the AG is more suitable for older gearboxes and let's face it most Commandos are at least over 45 years old and Dominator gearboxes even older.
