subaru starter

The kid's car wouldn't start in the supermarket parking lot. Went and looked at it (+5F and 25 mph NW wind). Nothing when turning the key except the idiot lights dimmed a little. Whacked the starter and it fired right up. I think it needs a starter.

Word on the alternator was to get a Subaru rebuilt. Is the same true for the starters ? Napa lists them for ~$100. Subaru lists them for ~$350-$450.

Cold weather makes batteries weak.
Dirty connections and frozen crud on/in the bendix compounds the problems.
You can test the starter before replacing it.

I have had good luck with very inexpensive new starters found on Ebay. Usually around $50, definitely worth trying.
If time dosn't allow, Duralast ones from Autozone have also been good.

not sure of your year and options but you get the idea.

Subarus have the solenoid on the starter and the contact points in it can be replaced easily...Have owned 5 high mileage Subarus over the years and that is the only fault I have ever had with a starter...I used to know Honda part number for contacts but the last ones I bought from an automobile electric repair shop...It's about a 10 minute job after the starter is removed...

If your lucky sometimes a tap will fix them, the solinod sometimes stick.
