While installing the inner cover on my transmission as I was torquing the nuts one started to get loose rather than tight. Yes I was using a torque wrench and it was set for the required 12 ft-lb. Feels like the stud is stripping the threads in the case. Now the question is what is the thread and size of these studs. I believe it is British but I could be wrong. What is the best way to repair the threads? Helicoil and if so what size. I could live with one of the seven being a different size than the others if it comes to that.

The case end of the (04-0064?, 00-0271?) stud should be 5/16 - 22 (5/16 BSF).

(The nut thread should be 26 tpi BSC-Cycle).

5/16 -22 helicoils or thread inserts are not easily found. What I would do is use a 5/16-18 insert (or helicoil) and make a special stud that is 5/16-18 on one end and 5/16 -26 on the other. 5/16-26 dies are readily available as are 5/16-18. Or if you have access to a lathe it is a fairly simple job.

google "recoil inserts"

I'm rebuilding a 88SS engine and just did one CEI(BSC) for the oil pump stud and a BSW for a timing cover screw.
You won't find them if you don't look...

I have most sizes for my british bikes since the small price to pay keeps them original and not bastardized. If I need a new size....I buy it.
In some cases, like to the top of the head on an atlas, I plug the hole and redrill and retap to original.
