and chains run the gauntlet these days. From $20 asian chains to top dollar oring, narrowed sideplates.....after buying a pair of Indian side panels a few years ago, I see what crappy steel looks and feels like. You get what you pay for....sometimes, maybe. Sites like this one of like minded folks are a good resource these days. I wonder how long the Norton popularity will endure? Us boomers seem to be the enthusiists today. BSAs have really fallen in popularity and value, at least in the US.Did it ever need replacing! I learned about chain wear and tight spots at that time.
Les,Not if it works for you that way just that there's no evidence that the factory did it that way even though there was a late factory release that shows it like that as long as you can protect the cable sheathing where it can rub against the heads of the exhaust studs or bolts.
Mike, I just had a close look at mine, which is inside the inner plate.Les,
I found this and thought it was the best way. I don’t know if I have the wrong plates.
Mike
No that is the right one (at least the second picture I don't know about the first) but the plates shown are wrong for peashooters which means the cable also has to be fed between the rubbers which isn't shown where the cable sheathing can be damaged against the silencer fasteners.I found this and thought it was the best way. I don’t know if I have the wrong plates.
This routing would work for an Interstate with the low silencers, but for Roadsters with peashooters, I agree with rob ss that it would be troublesome.Les,

Les,
I must have the wrong plates as I have tried the routing other ways and running mine between the plates has worked out to be the best way.My exhaust system lines up perfectly and the mounting rubbers have lasted for many years. My plates don’t look like the ones in the diagram I posted.Would the plates be different by changing from a balanced system on a 74 Roadster?
Thanks for your input on this.
Mike
Maybe my problem is to switch the plates like Dennis.
Mike
They look like the correct plates for peashooters.I must have the wrong plates

Correct they are not which is what I've been saying all along they're black cap plates with the triangular plate inverted.
No. I'm not sure the person who drew the diagram had ever seen a peashooter exhaust or a black cap exhaust either or he wouldn't have drawn the triangular plate upside down. That Service Release was from June 1975.View attachment 131223View attachment 131224
But my pictures are of the black cap exhaust and brackets.I think I have the correct plates but have assembled them incorrectly according to your picture.
