Stoopid Smiths Speedo electronic P.O.S.

I was at that same " What a waste of money" stage for a short while. It quickly progressed to " Wow, this is expensive torture".
After about a year of faffing about doing all kinds of testing, including removing the instrument and wiring it into another bike, Smiths agreed to have a look at it. I think I paid for shipping one way and they paid for shipping it back.
Some electronic part had failed.
It was suggested that it might have been caused by the charging system on the bike. They sent along a resistor to be added into the power supply.
The instrument works again, but I haven't used that bike very much since the repair.

"What a waste of money ."

What specifically is the issue? I have had them for years and have been very pleased with them.
Needle was doing occasional death throws right from the start . A numerical code reset would correct things for the first year . Many resets later the dial was dancing a lot , then the instrument gave up the ghost recently , no activity at all .
The e- tachometer works perfectly , mind you it's a simpler unit . No complaints with the tachometer at all .

Why don't you contact the vender where you bought it from? He maybe able to troubleshoot the issue.
Tom,
Right now I am in contact with the manufacturer to see if they can rebuild my units. I love the way they work but think they should last longer than 18,000 miles. I am not asking for a free repair, just want mine fixed.

18K? I got that out my last magnetic!
Order,
My factory speedo has 32,000 miles on it and it still works fairly well. I just prefer the electronic speedometer for their smoothness.

Id go to the electronic type but they aren't cheap and not all that easy to set up. 'bout time we had one that looks original but is plug and play.

To be fair, I've had Smiths magnetic instruments doing the death wobble at lower mileages.
Reminds me of the old Brit biker joke:
Policeman: 'Do you know how fast you were going, sir?'
Me - wags finger from side to side

I'm pulling the e-Smiths Speedo as a project for tomorrow . Will replace it with the original magnetic instrument which worked fine , with the cable , which worked fine . Not a clue why I fell for the idea . Enjoy .

I went back and installed my cable driven speedo but am going to pursue getting my electric one repaired. I made sure the cable was as free flowing as possible on the speedo and it still wobbles at higher speeds.which bugs me a lot.Hopefully I will get a response from CAI as I will put the e-unit back on once fixed.

Part of the character.

Use (very LIGHT bodied) grease on the cable & drive gears.
SMOOOOOTH

I use Jewel Amber rocker box oil for my speedo gear box. It was recommended for some other lubrication stuff by this Jim guy who dabbles in Nortons occasionally. It doesn't dry out like a grease or drip out quickly like oil. It stays where you put it and is working well so far after a few years using it...

😎🏁

I'll see your vintage warbird lube, refined from WWII era maiden oil, and raise you NBU15, comes down from the space shuttle. A little pricey though. 😎
