I have a stator that must have got real hot at some point and now has cracks around the inside and rear of body.
Would it be a good idea to fill those cracks with some epoxy or JB weld? It was assembled with proper air gap and
still shows no internal shorts and is charging correctly.
Thanks,

This happens with age, canot say I've tried it myself;

Silicon-Laquer, hight-temperature and oil-resistant (like DCA200 from Electrolube)

How about that red stuff that hot rodders use to paint the inside of their engines. I think its called "Glyptol", and I believe it is really some sort of coating for electrical motor components.

For many years the Lucas alternator was not encapsulated at all and worked fine, lots of engines and transformers around the world also work fine operating in oil and open air. In fact they probably run cooler that way.

I don't know what happened to the stator on my 650ss, it is one I pulled out of a junk box in the basement and it looked like it had been severely overheated, the plastic was all wrinkled and falling off. I don't think I could have sold it to anyone for $1. I scraped off the loose stuff and put it in the bike to see what it would do, and it charges like crazy with no problems.

So do the same, make sure there is nothing really loose that might fall off and get jammed in the monkeyworks and put it in. Chances are if you tried to put some new coating on an old oil soaked stator it's bond and compatibility with any plastics still there would be very questionable.
