Starter Motor

Hi. My starter just gone on my 961 too. I wondered what you did in the end as I cant find anyone in the UK to rebuild the exiting starter and as parts are impossible to get from Norton at the moment I am told by my dealer that a HD starter will fit (he even told me it will work better). Did you try this?
Read above thread. Harley Sportster 2009 to 2020 starter .

Hi Tony, do you know whether the sportster has a starter ring gear that would also graft onto the 961?

Hello ntst8 , No it does not. The clutch basket and starter ring gear are one piece on HD . If you mean using the entire HD clutch basket ? I have not looked into it , but I would assume not. Do you need a ring gear or a new starter ? Can't you order it from Norton ?

Thanks Tony, there is a pic in the Rebuilds section, 961 Birthday thread, of a very battered ring gear. The starter motor works but they don’t play well together.
I emailed the factory a week ago but presumably due to the Covid lock down haven’t had a response to date.

I seen on Facebook on the 961 forum, someone said the 961 uses the exact same starter as the kabota sub compact tractors.

Found it

Hi - does the starter or solenoid do anything? I have had two starter issues so far -
1. The holder of the brushes was corroded and so the brushes did not slide and lost contact with the commutator. Managed to fix with starter on the bike and kept running until the factory replaced it.

2. The connector onto the solenoid came undone inside the solenoid. Fixed at the factory and still running ok.

If the starter does absolutely nothing it could be a stand/ clutch interlock issue.........

Hi Voodoo , Mounting flange looks wrong in the photo. Compare to Harley Sportster starter to be safe . HD OEM is about $350 , aftermarket less than $200. You don't need the 1.4KW starter in my opinion. The standard 1.2KW is fine . The motor body is 1/4in. longer on the 1..4 KW version. Harley OEM will be sealed , aftermarket may NOT be. Remember Kubota runs dry ? I can tell you this much , A Harley Sportster Starter years 2008 - 2020 works I ran an aftermarket High torque for a year before I changed it out for the oil weeping out.

Look at this one and compare :

I dont disagree. I’m glad you noticed, the guy on the FB forum in the UK said it worked. Haven’t heard anything back since.

Just had this happen to me - the 2 little springs holding the brushes in on the fixed brushes (to the holder ) both snapped and therefore lost contact with the commutator - the other 2 looked rusty ish - I have managed to find a Denso brush holder online that looks like the exact replacement for £10 - so hopefully can fix it and use sealant on both sides of the metal casing to seal it as it looked a little rusty around the joins both ends.

Nice find! If it fits ok, any chance you can share the details so I can add it to the alternate parts list please?

I tried to keep mine going - eventually the brushes actually started fracturing so I modified some others which kept me going for a while but eventually cliffa sent this link and I bought an aftermarket. It came with a sheet which had performance test results for unit and it has been totally reliable for thousands of miles since.... https://www.dbelectrical.com/produc...ter-roadster-buell-black-1-4kw-1980-2012.html

100% correct part - an absolute fiddle to get it on in situ with the 4 sprung brushes - while i was at it replaced relays for Bosch one's - the 2 springs let me down on the original - they snapped in the middle bit that holds them sprung against the brush - possible water ingress and rust being an issue.

Well done finding that unit to fit - it's a messy job isn't it? My original starter had the brushes stick in the holders, from corrosion, losing touch with the commutator; first starter lasted months before a warranty replacement then repaired brushes on second after warranty ended to keep it going a bit longer before buying this new one which has been perfect.

Yet again makes me think that if quality components had been used on these bikes we would have been saved so much grief....

I seem to remember that the Zen and the Art book talked a lot about quality……
