In my recent off I got some fairly heavy scratches on the front stainless fender. Besides using different grits of wet/dry sandpaper what is a good finishing method to somewhat match the existing good finish?

Stainless is hard which makes the fix difficult eg as you say start with the grade that gets rid of the scratch and then work finer and finer followed by polishing, will take a lot longer than alloy as its so much harder. A new mudguard may be quicker.

Darn not what I was hoping for, but kinda figured. Well I'll start looking for a used one on ebay and in the mean time experiment on the scratched up fender, thanks for the reply kommando

You need a powerfull buffer about 1hp, a large wheel 8"" at least, white rouge and lots of mussle. I can show you fender I have done that most would toss away they can be fixed with time. The dolly work and sanding wet is the key but the mirror finnish needs the tools above to match the factory. About 150.00 in labor to save one. Most of a day.
