sproket replacement

Im on my second chain since owning my commando, and the rear wheel sproket is looking a bit sad. ebay prices list complete new sprocket/brake drum units at around $130-140US. Is it more commonplace and economical to have the old sprokect cut off and a new one welded on, or replace the entire unit? What do you guys do?
