Why don't you use the method suggested by, I think, our @ludwig .
Bring that cylinder up to compression - back it down a bit - feed some clean, soft rope (8mm?) into the spark plug hole until it's full then bring back towards compression. The rope will hold the valve shut so you can remove and replace the collets.
I have used this method - it worked well.
Just make sure it is on compression!!

Rob, I suspect @Britbike850 is using the @ludwig method, which uses a converted spark plug to hold the valve up, and the rocker arm to compress the valve collar.
