Sprag starter noise resolved......kinda (2010)

I don't have a MKIII, but from following this thread and the others linked, it struck me what a clever little device the hydraulic chain tensioner is. If I understand it correctly oil drops from the primary and collects in the funnel shaped casting. On the outwards stroke of the plungers oil is sucked in through the ball valve, then as one plunger is compressed the bearing valve stops the oil evacuating and the plunger on the other side is forced out of the body, so tensioning the chain on both sides of the run. Is that correct?

Cliff, yes, that is how the system works.

We had a MKIII that sat on our dealer floor unsold for a long time. We would crank it up for anyone that was interested and the horrible noise the primary made put them off the sale. The explanation of pumping up adjusters and oil filled plungers didn't sway anyone.

9 times out of 10, mine would just fire right up.

1 time out of 10 it would "clack" with a puff of smoke from around the exhaust clamp (backfire). Hit the button again, and it would start right up.
