Happens a strange fact.
I state: 1. The speedo drive works fine and turns freely (tried separately and the cable runs);
2. The speedometer works fine and turns freely (tried separately and the hand turns);
3. The speedo cable is new and runs well.
Unfortunately when I mount all of it and ride the rear wheel the speedometer doesn't work, the needle stays firm!!!!
What should I do?????
Thanks for the advice.
Ciao.

1. Does the cable turn at slow speed as in hand turning the wheel? If that is the case, the speedo gearbox may be stripped where the cable inserts. Mine would work at slow speed but at riding speeds it would not turn the cable. The square hole was worn.

Yes, the cable turns.

But the seedometer with the cable into turns if i tur the cable by hand from the end ( speedo drive side)!!!! N
What i must to do????
Thanks a lot.

Are you turning the rear wheel with your hand?

If so, then it is possibe you are not spinning the wheel fast enough for the speedo to show a reading.

Hi Les,
I hope it is as you say.
But, sorry, I get some doubt because if I turn the hand the speedometer cable moves as if around the wheel (hand) no signs of working.
Thank you.

Are you sure the drive gearbox is compatible with the speedo? Some systems are clockwise cable rotation, and others are anticlockwise/counterclockwise.
Also there are different drive ratios.

If the is cable is turning in the in the wrong drive direction for the speedo then the speedo will not work.

What speedo and drive gearbox are you using? Smiths? If so, what is the speedo type number SSM????/?? (printed at the bottom of the dial)? What is the drive gearbox number (BG?) and ratio (stamped on the ring at the rear of the drive gearbox)

Hi Les,
The rear drive gearbox is an 850ES with 1.25:1 ratio fit his rear 850ES wheel and turns anti clokwise (if i turn the cable by hand anticlokwise the speedo works).
The speedometer is a green ball (maybe 1971/73???)
Speedometer doesnt work

Thanks for helping me.
Regards.

OK, thanks. The speedo and drive seem compatible so the speedo should work (although I think perhaps you are viewing the cable rotation looking from the wrong direction, as both speedo and drive are 'clockwise' units ?).

If you can move the speedo needle by spinning the cable with your fingers, and the drive box turns the cable when you turn the wheel, then I would guess that you are just not turning the rear wheel fast enough for the speedo to show a reading. The only other option I can think of is that the squared end of the inner cable is perhaps not extending far enough into the speedo to engage with the drive spindle?

Hi Les,
You are in right, i wronged, is a clockwise rotation.
I will try to dismount the Venhil cable and mount better: i hope it will start to work!!!!
Thanks.

I had trouble with my speedo drive working until I got the inner cable ends correctly matching the Smith's drive unit and the speedometer. If the cable is wrong, be careful, you can ruin the speedo. The cable end into the speedo doesn't want to protrude out past the end of the nut that fastens the cable to the speedo. If you don't have the original cable, it can be confusing.

Here is a photo of my speedo drive cable showing the proper inner length sticking out (16mm) from the outer cable.

I hope this might help.
Speedometer doesnt work

Thanks to everybody f.
My cable is a new Venhill for Commando!!!!!!
If i turn by hand from the end of the cable (out of speedo drive) the speedometer wors!!!!
Ciao.

Thanks.
But the speedo works and turns well, not when is join rear to the cable and speedo drive!!!!
Ciao.

Must be the cable, speedo gear drive or something wrong with the way the cables connect to the speedo or gearbox.

Here's a dumb question but I haven't seen an answer in any if the posts. Are you riding the motorcycle and its not working, or just turning the rear wheel while on the stand?

No, the bike is on the stand, i just turn the rear wheel!.

But if i turn the cable from the rear with my fingers, the speedo moves!

Ciao.
