Some have asked why is the retainer ring there, you have to ask yourself if the retainer was not needed think of the money they could have saved.I think it is there to resist the end thrust from the helical spindle gear. Also to ease the fit as presented to the driver on the wheel. If the ring gear is still flat not dished from the spindle gear. You can fix these things.
It just so happens that the rivets removed from the retainer ring leave a hole just under the tap drill for a 2-56 tap.
Never remove the spindle gear when possible clean and re-grease in place lots of flooding and brushing.
Now counter sink the body after running a clearance drill through.1/4 long 2-56 flat head socket head screws are used here.
Now the ring gear is packed and set spun so that excess grease can be wiped away.
Now it's ready for another 10,000 miles take it apart to re-lube I never trust the Zerk because it leaves some old lube in there.
