I replied to a post titled "Helicoil" and had asked if someone knew where I could buy a tap for the exhaust port threads.
Jim Comstock who doesn't know me from Adam stepped up and offered me the use of his tap to repair my threads for the price of shipping it out to me.
I was blown away that someone would loan me a $150 tool and trust me to return it.
That was 2 weeks ago. I got it today in the mail and I gotta tell you, that is one sexy hunk of threaded steel.

I'll be starting a thread with pics of my "build". I made a few mods that I got off of here but tweaked them a little and learned a few tips I'd like to share also.
In the meantime feast you eyes on this beautiful thing.
I stuck in my box of loose taps and dies and they got real jealous.

Jim, I see you are online so a special thanx goes out to you for being a trusting and generous guy for loaning me this tap.
I will be sending it back on Monday.

Special Thanx

I've got the tap sitting on my desk like a paper weight in it's protective tube it was shipped in.
That comment about it being in a drawer with my other taps was just a little humor.
Like it is so big it made the other taps jealous. You know, "my threads are bigger than your threads".

Rest assured, I'm treating it well.

I have one of those taps. When it arrived I started laughing. It's comically large. Like clown shoes or giant sunglasses. And heavy. It's hard to comprehend a tap that big.

So is that a straight pipe tap or something more obscure than that? What does it actually say on it?

No doubt, Jim is out standing in his field. I think one of us should take him his coat, its still chilly out there.

Humor seems to be lacking around here.

Thats because the server was down.

The tap is a Widell-USA 1" 15/16-14 HSS H2 part# 595302
Like I said, it's so damn sexy

Shouldn't that read: Widell-USA 1 15/16"-14 HSS H2 part# 595302

(just moved the inch symbol)

How much does that sucker weigh?

Guido,
No Sweat, when I was using them to thread the bronze exhaust inserts I bought three of them. One to use and one for a back-up while the third was at the tool sharpener. It took a 7 1/2 horse motor geared down to 35 RPM to push that thing through a piece of cda 990 aluminum bronze.
I have gone to tapping with a carbide thread mill in the CNC machine nowdays. Those are really pricey but they last a whole lot longer. Jim
