1971 Commando, I will be running:

Dual output coil (CNW),
I can't find any specs but it appears to be a Crane #8-3006 http://cranecams.com/?show=eIgnitions ,

Tri Spark,
drawing 1A at idle and 2A at WOT,

H4 headlight,
Candlepower Super Bright 5 3/4", http://store.candlepower.com/53casubrla.html , I think it's a 55/60 halogen bulb but I'm not sure! (on a SPDT relay),

Delco horn,
drawing 5.5AMPS @ 12V (on a relay),

LED brake/tail light,
a Miller replica "stop" with the VOCLED1 kit, 19 LEDS with a draw of .13 Amps (Low) & .65 Amps (High),

LED Instrument bulbs,
drawing .35MA (X2),

LED license plate lights (4, they are in the bolts),
drawing .30MA current, 0.36 watts a pair (X2),

LED high beam indicator (single LED),

Fusebox (Centech AP-1).

I have a NOS Wassell 120W alternator, a Tympanium solid state unit, I will be running a custom harness (16G, -GND) with the ABSOLUTE minimum wire in it, a 2 position boat ignition switch (headlight on with the ignition) and Pingel Switchgear. I'm looking at a UPS battery in 9AH but because of space-concerns I would LOVE to run something smaller if I could, ideally it would be this http://www.power-sonic.com/site/doc/prod/86.pdf.

The thing that drove me nuts about my 1973 850 was that the headlight "pulsed" at redlights, should I run a Capacitor to eliminate this?

I'm such an Electrical Idiot that I don't even know what questions to ask, have I forgotten anything?

I have 2 dual switch Pingel handlebar mounted switchboxes, 3 momentary switches and a push on/off, I was figuring:

Momentary for horn, kill and "flash to pass" and

Push on/off for bright headlight on/off.

But remember that I'm an Electric-Moron so there is a pretty good chance I figured wrong!

Find a Batteries Plus store and check out thier small form factor AGM batteries...

Dumb questions #1 and #2 (of about a Jillion).

I have a new Wassell 120 Watt Alternator but it's Chinese-made and I have an aversion to Chinese goods,

Could I run an RM23 (180 Watt single-phase) from a MK III on my 1971 Commando with the Tympanium and

Would this allow me to run 2 horns? (I REALLY want to run 2 horns but the 2 would draw 11A).

Unclviny

I ran two horns mounted behind the crook of the Z plates with
1.2 ah battery. I depend on horns a lot to divert the many deer
before I see them and often enough while aiming at them to
get em moving before they recognize me as aggressively
aiming at them to run em over. Often leave thumb lightly
on button so bumps make horns fire in fast random blasts.

You should be able to make them roar with about any battery
for normal use, but if button got stuck they'd dull down after
a while. Relayed power of course help the volume projected.

Where will you hang Two Horns on yours?

The tympanium may not have enough capacity to handle the 180 watt single phase. I use a the hi-output single phase Podtronics with an RM23 stator along with dual Fiamm horns. No problems.

My plan is to build a box (with no bottom) and mount Electrics on it with the horns inside, it will sit centered in the frame basically where the battery/air cleaner is now but I'm still Ciphering on the box as it is going to end up serving a few purposes at once (Electric bits mounting point/Horn box/bottom support for the Oil-tank). I am not running the stock Oil-bag or any side covers and the battery will go into the tail-section (but the bike is not a Fastback).

I still have a few "mountains to climb" design-wise but this is what I do to amuse myself at work, I solve problems.

OH cool, I love the ah Ha brain hits on new arrangements especially doing
more than one thing well. Thought experiments to mock ups are
half the fun of rolling your own.

I've also slowly worked myself out of side covers on Ms Peel deal.
We all like to see as much scenery behind the cocky engine eh.

Oil bag, funny terms, hmm must keep that in mind for a number
of fluid issues.

I try to put electrics out of mind till the very end.
I may have to create my own wire unions as nothing
but sliced up trailer pig tails is sleek and robust enough.
Do take in account the fork motion harness tugs, getting
headlamp and bars off, adding saddle bags with lights.
a place to easy tap for battery charging and accessory
power.

I'm going out of the tackle box to hold trigger wires on frame.

Oh yeah, your description of circumstances was pretty cryptic to me.
Sounds cramped and intense non the less.

I'm as curious as hobot. I can't believe I just wrote that.

I monitor activity on drilling rigs from my "office", a modified 3/4 sized shipping container that I bring with me to drilling locations. I am (in title anyway) an Oilfield Geologist.

WIth that kind of job I'm surprised you don't have more posts than me.

I play with the old bikes to keep me off of ebay (it kinda works), ebay is FULL of stuff that I can't live without and the times when I'm doing nothing (like now) can get REALLY expensive!

I'm behind a Firewall so I can't get to all the Websites that I like, this one is "acceptable" to my Bosses (and it's about Commando's!).

We all have a sickness we don't want cured, just another fix.

Oil field geologist that carries his desk and shop with him, cool.
Please tell me the wells are being refilled from below and Gulf
spill is not a life time feature.

I don't think so (it just does not work that way, well occasionally it does but you can't count on it).

I wish I could say that!

Alrighty, you dodged my curve balls perfectly.
Been strange though that prior seeming less disruptive petroleum
events spiked gas prices, but not so far currently here.

My current head scratcher is trying to get thrombone like
oil fllter plumbing with nice fittings into a forced matings
in confined space and still look ok and be serviceable w/o
strain.

Allright,
The 120W Wassell unit is too small and the Tympanium can not handle higher output, I screwed up and should not have bought them. Here is (I think) the answer (all from Paul Goff http://www.norbsa02.freeuk.com/goffyleds.htm IF they are NOT made in China!):

2 wire single phase 190W (RM27pattern) Alternator

Welded stator

AREG1 (Paul Goff's regulator)

BATTERY STATUS MONITOR

I think that this will allow me to run the 5AH battery and possibly both horns. Electrics experts am I on the right track here?

I think the 2 wire Lucas is 180w.

Why do you think the Tympanum isn't enough? All I saw was Ron L throw out an assumption. Did you get it validated?

How much do think you'll use the horn(s)? Usually by the time you get around to hitting the horn you're too busy evading or kicking.

I have been told by a few folks that the Tympanium is old technology and that it's only good for stock systems.

I'm just a Horn kinda-guy, Brakes, Tires, Handling, Lights and Horns are (I think) some of the most important things on a bike (living and riding in Houston has taught me that).

No, the Lucas stuff is OLD technology.

Since you have a 120w alternator I"m sure it will be fine.
