Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum. I have a 1973 Commando 750 that I'm restoring. I used the Tri-Spark Classic Twin ignition system and it works great. Converted to single Mikuni carb. Also great. My question concerns spark plug inserts. When I removed the plugs an insert came out with one of the plugs. It is not a helicoil. It is a sleeve threaded on both ID and OD. The other side has the same thing (but it stayed in). Can I put some sort of locktite or other compound on the threads and reinsert it in the plug hole? Any suggestions? Thanks

Welcome Tim,

They sound like "TIME-SERT" inserts?: http://www.timesert.com/

They are supposed to self-lock into place, so it may be better to fit a new Timesert and see if that cures the problem?
I must admit I've never used them myself, so I can't say how well they hold in a spark plug hole?

Thanks. I went to the web site and they are indeed "Time-Serts" as you suspected. I'll order new inserts and hope that solves my problem.

The bottom of the insert is slightly smaller internaly,a special fitting tool scews in and expands& locks the insert into place.I would recomend getting a new one properly fitted because once that hole is stuffed you are starting to run out of easy repair options,in place any way.

Try a new one first, but you could mechanically lock it if necessary. I'd see if there is a high temp Loctite product first.

Also make sure the insert is below the surface so that the spark plug doesn't actually lock against the top of the insert and wind out every time you change the plug, most loctite breaks down above 250 *c ,good luck a simple thing can become very painful.
