They are running slightly rich from running with the PWK carbs that I was having troubles with, they ran good when the PWKs were running right but they kept getting stuck floats that didn't help the running and it was missing when I opened the throttle too quick, why I replace the PWK carbs and gone back to my old Amals, but after 35k + miles on those old plugs the electro have no sign of wear, no carbon build up and just a slight rich colour running.
My old Amals before I fitted them back on the Norton they were completely pulled down, the left carb had a completely blocked pilot jet and took the 3rd pull down before it finally got unblocked, new jets needle, float needles were all replaced (full carbs rebuild kits) with the pull down 3 years ago and new plugs fitted, I run 270 main jets instead of 260.
With the Joe Hunt magneto the Norton fires on first kick every time can sit in top gear at 40 MPH and fully open the throttle and the Norton springs into life and will rev past 8k RPMs if I let it without missing a beat, the new plugs I replace when I put the old Amals back on are running very nicely and no longer running rich, the last time I pulled the plugs they looked great, didn't even clean them and put them straight back in, while my Norton is running great I leave it alone, just do the oil changes when needed and other maintenance, but I do pull the plugs to see how its running when I do an oil change and also pull the front cover off the Joe Hunt to inspect the point and put a few drops of STP on the points cam felt to keep it lube.
My 850 Norton isn't a stock motor, I built it for the Featherbed frame and solid engine mounts, crank is balanced at 72%, I run a 2S cam 40 oversize Hepilite pistons, the final hone between the pistons and bore was tighter clearance than what was recommended, head has been shaved and fully ported with running full open pipes/mufflers
After going back to my old Amals, running the Joe Hunt magneto my Norton is running the best it ever has in the 50 years of ownership since new, it's a sweet running bike now, I do know my own Norton.
