Could someone post a photo of a spark plug with color for ideal mixture strength

My notes say : Vm. 34 850 Single carb , 35 pilot jet , Slide size 3 , air jet 1.1 . , proceed .
You still won't address why one side is sootier than the other . That tells me electrical issue , or a bad plug .
buy a 35, a 37.5, and a 40
Lately I've had two Commandos that had old leaky choke plungers. It should be a matter of course to change them every few years.

I'm fairly happy with this (Denso VW22) after a bit over 2000 miles. Last 15 miles was "around town" riding.
It must be burning fairly clean because putting it back in was with fingers, only the last 30 degrees was with a torque wrench (20Nm).

35k + miles with these plugs running with my Joe Hunt magneto, this is how I pulled them out untouched, running PWK carbies, the only reason I put new plugs in was putting my old Amals back on so new plugs to tune in the Amals after 11+ years with the PWK carbs and problems with left carb float sticking all the time decided to go back to the Amals, the Amals have been back on for over 3 years now and haven't touched the plugs since putting them in, my Norton is running the best it ever has, big spark from the Joe Hunt, Amals jetted for the work done to my motor with open pipes and Champion N7YC plugs, for some reason my Norton runs best with the N7YC plugs and the Amals and JH work so well together.

When was the last time the needle jets were renewed? what clip groove is the needle in? I assume the are old MK1 carbs. 30MM.

Yeah , sorry to say Ash but those plugs are running rich . New needles n' jets .

They are running slightly rich from running with the PWK carbs that I was having troubles with, they ran good when the PWKs were running right but they kept getting stuck floats that didn't help the running and it was missing when I opened the throttle too quick, why I replace the PWK carbs and gone back to my old Amals, but after 35k + miles on those old plugs the electro have no sign of wear, no carbon build up and just a slight rich colour running.

My old Amals before I fitted them back on the Norton they were completely pulled down, the left carb had a completely blocked pilot jet and took the 3rd pull down before it finally got unblocked, new jets needle, float needles were all replaced (full carbs rebuild kits) with the pull down 3 years ago and new plugs fitted, I run 270 main jets instead of 260.
With the Joe Hunt magneto the Norton fires on first kick every time can sit in top gear at 40 MPH and fully open the throttle and the Norton springs into life and will rev past 8k RPMs if I let it without missing a beat, the new plugs I replace when I put the old Amals back on are running very nicely and no longer running rich, the last time I pulled the plugs they looked great, didn't even clean them and put them straight back in, while my Norton is running great I leave it alone, just do the oil changes when needed and other maintenance, but I do pull the plugs to see how its running when I do an oil change and also pull the front cover off the Joe Hunt to inspect the point and put a few drops of STP on the points cam felt to keep it lube.
My 850 Norton isn't a stock motor, I built it for the Featherbed frame and solid engine mounts, crank is balanced at 72%, I run a 2S cam 40 oversize Hepilite pistons, the final hone between the pistons and bore was tighter clearance than what was recommended, head has been shaved and fully ported with running full open pipes/mufflers
After going back to my old Amals, running the Joe Hunt magneto my Norton is running the best it ever has in the 50 years of ownership since new, it's a sweet running bike now, I do know my own Norton.

Ash , That is good to hear, but the photo you posted looked very dark. and it is better to post a picture with a bottom view, kind of like I did. Any ways, hi ho, hi ho, I'm off to camp I go.

The Norton is running fine now and back to Amals that I know more about, Jim set up the PWKs for my motor but they just wasn't right and had a lot of troubles with then for the 10 + years they were on my Norton, Amals a lot more simple, easier to work on and easy to tune right, I am not worried about those old plugs the new ones are running fine and a better colour now, no more back/rich running, the Norton running sweet.
