I am in the process of rewiring my MKIII and want to change to negative ground. I'm going to upgrade to modern switchgear, M/C, etc. Does anyone know if the solid state warning lt module on my bike will function with negative ground? I believe the older 3 wire style will function OK, but not sure about the newer ones. Without a wiring schematic it is hard to know. Hate to burn one up.

Dunno. But you could just reverse the + and - wires that many other things need to do with the - ground conversion. The worst that could happen is a blown component or fuse. Easy for me to say.

The pre-Mk III works because AC current simply heats a piece of Ni-Cr wire which heats up and breaks the DC connection to the lamp. It doesn't care which terminal is attached. The Mk III uses AC current to bias a transistor on or off as voltage rises.

Now I'm out of my league to predict if simple reversing of leads to the transistor will work or burn up. Sorry.

I'd just wire in a simple voltage (charging) switch such as RGM and others offer. They don't care if they are negative or positive ground.

Yep. Transistors don't like reverse polarity.

Agreed. I just bought one from SparkBright, calibrated for my Li battery. Looking forward to installing that.

BTW Ron, thanks for posting those schematics. I dunno where you got them from but they should be in our tech data page here.

And a link to that on the tech page here would be nice...

Hi

I run my MK111 wired negative earth, I fitted the negative earth variant of this Standard Charge Warning Light unit, it's small cheap and works great. https://www.improvingclassicmotorcycles.com/products.htm

Be sure to select the negative earth version;)

The RGM one is not polarity sensitive, is about a 1 inch square cube. I've had one in my Interstate for about 15 years (with three phase alternator but with positive ground). I'm sure either will work.
