Sockets/Spanners

1970 750S to date i have got by without any issue using a combination of SAE and metric sockets/spanners which have fitted everything i have needed to undo/do up. Luck maybe because all the bolts are original that i can tell.Next is the gearbox rebuild and OldBritts info states all gearbox fittings are Whitworth. I am sure some are going to be interchangeable but can anyone tell me if i am likely to run into any major issues? such as the countershaft sprocket nut maybe and should i go to the expense of buying Whitworth sockets which will take time to get.
I realise there are other special tools that are avail which hopefully i can make do .

Yep, you are gonna need Whitworth wrenches and sockets if you want to work on British bikes. I can't remember if all the fasteners in the gearbox are CEI on the Commando. Do you own or plan to work on other British bikes? All my bikes pre-1970 or so have exclusively CEI fasteners. The two post-1970 ones I own (72 Triumph TR6C and 74 Commando) have a mix of types. If you only plan to work on a Commando, maybe you can borrow the tools you need if you don't want to purchase yourself. There is a special large socket available for the countershaft nut but there may be a more readily available socket that will fit.

You will need the thin wall sockets to remove the inner cover, Don't ask how I know. I now have two sets of sockets! Chuck. :roll:

Since you are in Oz you may have good luck at yard sales and jumbles.
In Oz and Kiwi I coolected enough Whitworth stuff that way to Service my Mini and Anglia vans respectively.
In Kiwi my father in law had a good Whitworth assortment as everyone did in the old days.
Next time I'm in Kiwi I'll be looking for replacements for my favorite old King Dick stuff.
