On any older vehicle you have to $pend the money. New seals. New rubber. New gaskets New bearings and bushes.

I need to say , that all the parts on that engine were not supplied by Carl Hokanson and so were not from KPMI , they were from another source in UK , but the valves and guides were OK with nice tolerances , I don(t want to make any misunderstanding , as Carl was allways a nice guy and a good supplier of good parts plus every time a full instruction sheet to inform you about the specs and tolerances , when I ha&d re-read my previous post , I was affraid of any misinterpretation .............

I had my head off 2 times chasing grimlins. Damn rings never seated. Hone, rerring and break in oil. Stopped the part time smoke.

Did you fit Kibblewhite seals to intakes , or stick with the cracky heat me up and then split and ride on the valve stems , plastic crap. ? I believe seating rings takes time , do not baby it , just do your riding style to do that seating. Most smokings are valve related.

2500k miles and rings didn’t seat, I sent the head off to the best. Finally pulled cylinder and rings looked like they just came out of the box.

Nobody wants to talk about the single most important thing. The intake valve seals.

Update, finally got around to pulling the head, head gasket is the culprit, fairly bad leak at drain hole, odd because I've never had problems with composite gaskets in the past. The inlet stem seals appear OK, but as a precaution I'll replace them with some new KPMI seals I have sitting around

I have used these for the last 10k miles. When I pulled the head they were still supple and in place. Because it is a small expense and a large-ish PIA to pull the head insitu , I installed new ones.

Now we're talk'in". Yes. Proceed.

Viton seals can be any color - red, blue black etc. The best seals have a band or spring collar on both the top of the seal to restrict oil and also at the bottom of the seal to prevent them from comming off the guide. The teflon seals require an installation tool and are usually destroyed on removal. But the viton seals can press on by hand.

Spring Banded Viton seals - press on by hand and can be removed/replaced

I've heard some rumors (from Total seal) about problems with teflon seals and oxygenated gas (but not confirmed).
