Doctor, could you give me a diagnosis please?

I have one like the blue box pictured a few posts ago. Have used it many times as I have four bikes. Works really well better than any of the others I have had over the years. If you are only dealing with a Commando then the RGM piece might be the best bet.

Who makes/sells the one you & Time Warp use?

They all come from the same Chinese factory (or factories).

Mine's a Neilsen.

Several similar sets on ebay for less than £20 inc. free postage.

I bought a set of Blue Spot circlip pliers with a lifetime guarantee off Amazon the other day for £3.66 free p&p.

Cost you not far off that to send a letter o_O

And...can people please stop pushing the hone and new rings (at less than 7000 miles) until the real status is identified.

The bore is capable of 100,000 miles, why mess with it if it isn't a problem!

Disassemble and inspect head....check all valve parameters and seals....do required repairs including threads.

Disassemble and measure pistons and rings....

Might as well take your time and only do what you need on a bike that is just about run in after 47 odd years!
And after inspecting the head and re-assembling it make sure and keep up on retorquing the head bolts.
Both sides look like they may have some headgasket leakage.
The piston washing may be due to oil from the pushrod tunnel leaking past the headgasket, or as stated, valve stem seals. The OEM seals are hardly even worth installing. They normally fail or come loose in short order.

I've used an old, large C-clamp for years. Took an old toolkit plug socket and notched one end for magnetic collet extraction.

Cheers comnoz

Are there any better 'upgrades' to the OEM seals?

The head had a couple of doses of de-greaser today.

My lad is popping in tomorrow with an internal micrometer to get a measurement of the bores. I have to say, they look fine. There's no visible scoring and it feels smooth in all areas - but of course that doesn't mean anything.

Top of the barrel sans copper gasket.

Rather that guess at the problem, do the right thing, Rebore to .020, new guides and valves too. Otherwise you will be doing the job 2 or 3 times.

I take your point and you may be right, but I'll see how the bores measure up later before I change everything with so little mileage.

On the subject of +20 rebores, I notice RGM have new Hepolite piston sets (made in Taiwan?) for £83 or NOS for £190 (+ vat).

Would the originals be favorable for just over double the cost?

Don’t even look at them yet! Measure and replace AS REQUIRED.

If you start down that road you’ll end up like one of those idiots with a 920, TTI, etc !!
