Check out the cool shirts for the LSR team...

How much for a T-shirt----If it's been mentioned already, I've missed it?

'Ernie balances the cranks for minimum vibration/bearing loads.'

That is why I rebalanced my stock 850 crank to 72%.
Rohan thinks it is about rider comfort - fails to note that most standard commando engines which get over-revved, shag the crankcases before they explode. It has little to do with the fact that the motor is rigidly mounted in my Seeley frame, except that the vibes from a standard crank would crack it. All that happens is the vibration moves down the rev range and it appears when the bike is idling. When it is revved at 7000 RPM, it is as smooth as silk and that is where the bearing loads are the maximum if standard balance is used in any commando motor. When my bike idles, it rocks backwards and forwards - hardly 'comfortable'.
The staggered crank might fix that, so I wonder if the isolastics are really necessary on a standard commando ?

To get the truth on that ride an Atlas down a Freeway at normal traffic speed. But not for long, you will need to stop and get off to allow blood circulation to return.

Wow! Made the mistake of googling Sighn grooved combustion chamber mods and found more to read, interesting concept for increased flame speed/turbulence resulting in more detonation proof engine with increased torque/hp and fuel economy. Is this for real? Seems like it only applies to combustion chambers with real squish bands to groove but then that's what Sir Eddy's Rocket has now. Has anyone done this or looked into it, makes sense to me but that's neither here nor there...Mark

Yeah I'm up on Singh and his groovey engines and following. Some decent squish surface is needed to spray the flame jets then suck em back. Grooves Only Make Mo Power/Torque If You Are Willing to Run Engine just beyond ragged edge of detonation That would otherwise occure w/o the groove. Basically low rpm lugging and hi rpm higher CR or lower octane with boosted engines though some nature inspired dragsters dyno show some benefit. I did it to my side valve flat head mower and makes a deeper softer sound with less oil darkening and lugs as good or better than before. I made a crows foot, one long big groove fed by 2 smaller shorter ones. They claim less carbon build up in chambers too and why I added two more grooves after opening up to see the nice effect to expand on.
You can get too many grooves and power suffers to there is some scientific art trial and error involved.

Thanks for that hobot, looks like Sir Eddy's chambers are perfect for the Sighn mod, can't wait till his bike runs...Mark

Hobot,
Didn't you post the complete crank machining from start to finish on one of your postings? If not I will load them all and post it.

Your dad sure cut a super hero profile to me. My dad was sorely against m/c's and made me try to sell off my P!!, and might have to the Trident guys that came to check it out, so showed em + my father, what it could really do on last run by floating front level... By time I got the nil leaning Norton turned around they were gone. He said they didn't say anything but got the impression the P!! scared them. Hope you go so fast you can't ever get it out of your being.

As you know even after hitting the deer he kept going. He rebuilt the Horton and sold it to a guy in Arizona. Andy saw it on Ebay and tried to buy it back. When the seller heard the news the price went up. It made it back to my brother Andy and now sits on his lanai in Hawaii... I will be there in a couple week and look forward to riding with my dad.

Note the combo gas and oil tank, where in the hell is the wind screen?

What is that in the left, background? Looks comfortable for laying out. :)

Not sure, never noticed the big pad on the top, looks to be a two stroke?

Sorry we missed you at the BUB meet. I was there helping my friend Eric run his Guzzi-powered streamliner. Steve Maney came over to make up the rest of our 3-man crew. You'd have enjoyed talking to Steve about your Norton effort. He's now got the Bonneville bug, and is building a short stroke Commando engine built for the 650 cc class. We plan to put it into my featherbed race bike, after I do some El Mirage meets with the current 920 engine, and have Steve ride it at next year's BUB meet in the 650-M-PG class. If we have time, we might hook up the nitrous and also run the 650-M-PF class. Be fun if we could all pit together.
