Silencer loudness

Years ago I had a 400-4 Honda with a 4-1 with a removable rear plate.
I could take out the inner pipe and wrap in in house insulation, pink
fibreglass, and get a good reduction in sound. However, the glass fibre
was quickly pounded and the noise returned. But a roll of insulation was
quite cheap and I simply rewrapped as necessary.

Last year I decided to fit a set of genuine peashooters for a track day to try and keep the noise down, as the set I normally run are quite noisey, after market units straight through baffles(if any) could be Taiwanese copies, came with the bike.
I have a set of JS carbs, balanced std length headers, and with the so called genuine peashooters I couldn'r get it to rev over 5200 rpm no matter what needle setting or jet size I tried. Put the noisey non genuine units back on, runs sweet all through the rev range. Go figure ????
Regards Mike

I came accross this a few years back and found at the time that the silencers with the visible weld at each end were quieter than the ones with no weld at the thin end, is this the case with yours? No idea who makes the various styles though ( no weld, one weld, two welds).
Yes, yes & thrice yes.
These have only one weld at the rear end. My 850 has 2 welds & sound much better.
I have PW3 cams in both, so yes, making them a bit louder.

I I was debating the Dunstall reps and was then tempted by a Dutch company selling OE Dunstalls still in their box at 305 euros delivered. I passed but they are still showing for sale. Does anyone here use the copies and do they sound any different to peashooters?

I just removed a pair of Dunstall reps from my 850. Had them on for 7 years, many happy miles but they started to make me deaf! They sound absolutely hot, a really big growl and great on the gear down very different to peashooters but frankly way too loud for town and tiresome on long distance runs. Last week I fitted a pair of EMGO peashooters, I am impressed with the smooth chrome, solid build,, tidy welds and a very authentic Commando sound. The bike runs very well with them.

Thanks ML, it's what I thought. I've gone back to earplugs with the PW3 cam as it is a much harsher and harder sound than the stock cam.
