is there some universal sidestand replacement for a 71? The pin snapped off my stand and it is a complete bear to switch to the new stand. Is there a cheap and somewhat reliable aftermarket stand I can weld on with out removing the primary and motor?

I did the Old Britts lug on my 71. Not something that could be easily done without removing the engine if at all. Worth the effort considering the other bolt on options I found.

Mike, does "Not something that could be easily done without removing the engine if at all"
mean that you don't need to remove the engine?

I just did the side stand lug upgrade, and I can't imagine attempting that on anything other than a bare frame.

If you want easy then just put a stock unit back on. They're not the latest and greatest but if yours is the original then it did last 46 years. Put the old style back on and keep in mind the design flaws.

NO, engine must come out. Sorry for the convoluted language. As I recall, the hardest part was getting all of the old sidestand lug and weld off. The new one welded on rather nicely.

I fitted a Kawasaki zzr1100 side stand and lug to my commando, welded the lug straight onto the frame at the back of the cradle instead of the front,it works extremely well there was nothing wrong with the standard side stand but the bike lent over too much in the 3foot wide alleyway at the back of my place ,clutch lever and handlebar grip would be stuck in the fence while the bike was on the side stand whilst I locked the gate, this really became an issue every morning every night ,I can't fit a standard centre stand because I have an extra iso under the gear box

Just go with a center stand. My 71 still has the lug on the frame but I hear they tend to snap off and down it goes.
I always use the center stand. More sturdy anyway I think.

It looks like the only way is the hard way. The owner is 80 years old with hip problems. The Norton has a CNW electric start and now this happened. Back to the starting point.

I have two '71s. Both missing sidestands when I got them. One still has the lug, the other one does not. I just use the centerstand.
Still looking for a '71 stand to buy.

That's one of the reasons I moved the stand backwards, much easier to operate it has a double spring for safety ,very stable and you don't have to pull the motor to fit it

It can be done without removing the engine. I did it on my ‘71. Maybe a clean break helped but I got under there, ground to bare metal and arc welded the Old Britts type replacement lug on it last year. No problems.

I've often wondered why both Norton and Triumph chose to mount the sidestand lugs so far forward and at such an angle that the stand had to be far longer than most. If mine breaks off again I'll go this route instead.
